Hi all,

Bought a tivo from Ebay the other day. It was described as: "Has been diagnosed with a hard drive fault".

It arrived today, so I got the cover off straight away and put in a working 120 GB Samsung drive, that I had lying around after updgrading my existing TiVo.

Worryingly, it still froze at the "Almost there. A few more seconds please ..." message. After reading this thread (http://archive2.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=2821347&&#post2821347) , I accessed a bash prompt via serial lead and disabled the modem test.

Sure enough, it cured the problem. After reboot, the boot continued normally and I can get the TiVo Central menu.

Now, here's the question: Is the modem fixable, or is the only option to fork out for a network card?

Thanks,

PPJ.

Problem is the diagrams etc etc are for US series 1 TiVo's. The circuit is similar, schematics are available "in the other place", but don't match the UK modem, as I spent ages wondering and trying to repair the modem on a lightning struck TiVo I was given.

Given the hassle and risk of trying to fix the modem yourself, and the possible expense of sending the Tivo away for a repair to the motherboard, I'd recommend going for a network card. They are available quite cheaply these days.

I haven't seen any cheap ones recently. There are none of any type on ebay at the moment. Also, the outfit who made "terbonet" cards seems to have stopped.

Current prices from 9th tee, with delivery to UK, are:

Turbonet: $95.50 (£51.91)
Cachecard: $121.70 (£66.16)

Both are well over the customs limit, so there may well be VAT and courier admin fees to add to that.

Hmmm.

You do see turbonets on ebay for a BIN at about £30 every now and again..

That would be more like it.

I've set up a daily search on Ebay, so if one comes up at around that price, I'll get it.
