Going to have an Axim PDA in the next day or so... runs on Windows Mobile 5 (I believe)
Sorry that this has probably been mentioned MANY MANY times - but is there an easy step-by-step way to get TTG files onto the PDA and playable?
Thanks,
Jeff

Don't know what the specs are for your Axim. You might be able to use Videora iPod Converter to produce videos you can use, but only if your Axim can play MPEG-4 or h.264 videos...

I have used BetaPlayer to play DivX and Xvid encoded MPEG4 AVI files on an older Audiovox and newer HP IPAQ and it works very well. BetaPlayer is now called TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player). http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about
I use AutoGK (a GUI shell around the various Gordian Knot tools) to convert the video . I usually set AutoGK to 1-pass and a fixed quality percentage (50-75%) and to resize to the display; i.e., 320-pixels wide to match the PDA screen (also set to MP3 CBR at 96-128 Kbps). These settings will usually squeeze a full-length movie down to < 300MB so you can fit 3 movies on a 1GB card.
You'll need to get the Xvid codec (free) or the DivX codec (small fee) for AutoGK encoding.
You'll need to pre-process the TTG file to feed AutoGK - Google these terms:
- Video Re Do
- Direct Show Dump

PocketDivxEncoder is easier to use then AGK.

I have WM5 running on my cell phone. I am able to use Media Player to send TiVo files to the phone. It does a quick transcode to WMV and then sends that to the device. The only trick is with the AXIM you have full VGA and not QVGA so you will want to set the appropriate resolution for your output.

I have an Axim x50v. I use PocketDivxEncoder after using DirectShowDump. Then transfer to my CF card. PDE has a setting for VGA pdas. Works well playing on TCPMP

The new Tivo Desktop 2.3 is out and might support your device, though it isn't listed explicitly at:
http://www.tivo.com/4.9.4.1-1.asp

According to http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv079933.htm? the new Tivo Desktop 2.3 Plus will support:
# Windows Portable Media Center
# Sony PSP
# iPod
# Treo
# Nokia N80
I'm not sure if an Axim is a Windows Portable Media Center or not. I'm guessing not...

TTG supports any device running portable WMP 9 or higher out of the box by using WMP 10 on XP. PDA, phones, and PMCs are supported though TiVo doesn't mention all of them. Who knows why... There's a support article somewhere on how to covert and sync and I probably have a link off my FAQ.

quick question, if anyone can help it would be appreciated. i just got a new cellphone the motorola q. do i need the new ttg desktop software to transfer files to it or can i do it with the old software? now i believe i can transfer the recordings in .tivo format now and then convert through windows media player, but i would like to cut the time down from transferring from the tivo. will the new software allow faster transfers in the already correct format to just place on my minisd card and play on my windows media player portable? thanks in advance.

The files land on the PC as .tivo and are converted there. Both the old and new software will convert to .wmv free of charge. The good news is that WMP converts these things pretty quickly even if the transfer is a large file and isn't as fast as you'd like.

thanks dave. so if i understand correctly there is no way to avoid the long transfer to begin with? i was hoping the new software would encode before transferring the .tivo file, i guess that is not an option?

The TiVo box does not have the horse power to transcode video. Heck the reason it's so slow to transfer is not because of the network or the size if the recording, but because the processor is slow and can't multiplex fast enough.
