I am so confused of why this is happening. I took videos off my tivo using tivo playlist and now that I upgraded the drive in the Tivo I am putting some (not all) shows back on the tivo using Tivo desktop and transfering by going into the now playing list. The files orginally on the Tivo and then my computer is 800 MB for 30 min. Now it is 1.6 GB for the same 30 min. Why? This doesnt make sense as the quality has not changed. I am thinking about maybe reincoding the file, but I would hate to have to do all that work and then retransfer again.

How big a drive did you expand to? If you did the -r4 thing, maybe you are being caught by the bigger sectors.

It could also just be a calculation error. How are you determining the transfered files size on the TiVo? If you're using the web interface there are some bugs in that which could be causing this. If you have 7.3 on your TiVo you can simply go into the program description for the recordings and press the info button. It'll bring up an extended information screen which shows you the file size on disk.

Went from 40 GB to 200 GB with InstantBake. It is also only some transfers and when they start they have the right size allocated to them but when they finish it doubles. I think only 1 out of like 8 or so has not doubled and it was not transfered differently in anyway so I am confused how that happened.

Took a look on the Tivo and saw that the 1 transfer that didint double has less then 1% disk usage while the ones showing double in size have 2% so TivoPlaylist, Tivo web interface and even the Tivo itself is showing them to be double in size. Very odd, glad I do have a larger drive, but that is taking up about 10 hours of wasted space which could be a lot of shows I would also like to record.

That is bizare. Are these .tivo files? Or did you convert them to MPEGs using one of the decryption techniques? Do they play correctly? Do they have a green bar that shows they're twice as long as they should be? Anyhting else weird?

It's pretty much impossible for 800MB of data to take up 1.6GB of space, with the exception of the cluster size thing mentioned above. So this is most likely a metadata error. However it might be causing the TiVo to allocate that space and make it unuseable.

They were taken straight off for me to convert maybe later but never got around to it. They play normally and I don't notice anything odd about them. The fastforwarding, green bar, etc. all are normal. If it wasnt for the TivoPlaylist I am sure I would have never noticed how they are bigger then they should be. Tivo alocates the correct size while transfering but then after it jumps to double. Should I do a kickstart and 57 or 58 and see if that fixes it?

I wouldn't bother with the kickstart. The one thing to keep in mind is that all the programs you're using to get this size are getting it from the same metadata. So it's possible this is simply a bug in the code which sets the metadata.

What you should do is try transferring it back to your PC and see if it's actually that size or not. That'll give you the truth as to whether or not it's actually taking up more space on your TiVo.

Took awhile for me to get to be able to run test from lack of time to networking problems but I did transfer about three more shows back to the tivo and 1 out of the three corrected and now shows the correct size. I did the test to transfer one back to the computer and it is the correct size back on the computer yet the tivo, web intraface, etc. says the file is larger. As long as it isn't take up double the space it isnt too bad, but if it is it sucks because these are shows I want to KUID.

I was just looking at one of my TiVos over the network and it's all f*cked up. I have some half hour medium quality shows which are reported as being 96MB and several 1 hour programs being reported at about 160MB. An hour of Medium should be over 1GB.

I haven't actually transfered any of the shows to see how bug they really are, but that just can't be right.
