I currently own my HR10-250 and have no real need for a 2nd unit. But, I've been a DTV customer and Sunday Ticket subscriber for ever so according to another thread it seems clear I can get a free (leased) HR10-250 unit from DTV.
My question is what should I do if I do get this free HR10-250 unit. Should I sell my current HR10-250 that I own and start using this new unit that I will only be leasing?
How will the upgrade work when the new MPEG4 HD DVR's become available? Is there some way for me to upgrade to that unit when it comes out, with this new leased unit? Or would I be better off to have the current HR10-250 that I actually own?
Sorry guys, I'm just confused as to how everything will work. What would you guys do if you could get a free (leased) HR10-250 but didn't really have any use for it now?
Thanks in advance for any advice...

Well, it's not completely free. There will be a $4.99 mirroring charge plus you get a two year commitment. On top of that, you don't own the new box - you're leasing it.
We don't really know how the "upgrade" will work. (I put "upgrade" in quotes as in many ways the HR20 is likely to be a downgrade from the HR10. The assumption seems to be that there will be a "nominal" fee (guess range from free to $100 or more) to replace the HR10 with the HR20.
If it were me, I'd take the offer and hook up both units. But if you really have no use for it now, put one away for the time being.

Jesus...DTV could charge me 100 clams to give up a PVR everyone loves for a PVR everyone will probably hate, just so they can then charge me more monthly for only 4 of the 7 HD local stations that I can record now OTA for free?

The only problem with just putting it away would be that you are expected to activate within 30 days, aren't you?
I am having the same issue right now. I am thinking I am going to try and get 1. My husband is anticipating getting an HDTV in the spare room, sometime in the future, but we aren't sure how far in the future. It might be 6 months to a year until we save up enough to get it. But how can I pass up this deal? Would you guys do it? I am leaning towards yes. We can just hook it up to a standard tv for now.
One thing to clarify, please remind me, if we are just replacing a regular receiver, is it still just a $4.99 mirroring charge? We subscribe to the Total Choice Premier, or whatever package gets you the DVR $5.99 fee waived and I can't quite remember if my HD Tivo box costs me more a month or is the same price as a standard non-HD Tivo.

IMO...especially if you own your first HR10/250...it's good to have a backup in case it craps out. I've now got a 2nd leased unit hooked up to our game TV, and really don't care too much about the fact that it's a HD unit.
But if our main unit somehow fails, I've got a quick fix for it.
And when (if) the MPEG 4 HR20 comes out, I'll trade in the 2nd leased unit and see how it goes, while hanging on to my first love...my original upgraded HR10/250.

IMHO, there's no such thing as an extra HR10-250. There is always a need for more tuners and storage space. :)

I already have 2, but are you saying that I can get a third for free b/c I subscribe to SUnday Ticket and Superfan? You mentioned the mirroring fee, but if I replace a sd box with this tivo, that wouldn't exist...correct?

I'd agree except some people (me) have such complicated setups feeding other tvs in the house that rewiring now would be too difficult :) I'm happy with my 2 stacked units now.
