View Full Version : Scrubs in HD? What the F...?

I just burned off the last ep of "Scrubs". As usual, it was typically hilarious, touching, goofy, tasteless, heartwarming, and mixed with sight gags and a few pointless gags that missed the mark, plus the obligatory season finale twists (thank God no main characters bought the farm like in 30 other season finales this year). Other than that, pretty normal.

But something seemed off. At the 13 minute mark it began to dawn on me... "Hmmm...this thing looks a little better than normal. Holy Christmas! This sucker's in HD! JD's in HD!" (I guess the lack of ugly blue side panels and the hideous 14:9 stretch Gannett stations seem so fond of should have been my first clue.)

Is it just me, or does this seem a tad unusual? "Scrubs" was one of those legacy SD shows which typically end their runs in SD. In fact, I can't remember an SD show that switched to HD mid-season, let alone for the season finale. And at the time they filmed, they were not picked up for 2007 and didn't expect to be. I wish "That 70's Show" had done this for their finale (instead, we got SD shows all year with HD teasers).

I guess maybe the revolution IS being televised.

Yep. I had the same reaction. A few minutes into the show, I said "Hey, it's in HD!".

Actually it was kind of weird. For me anyway the first few minutes of the program were 4:3 like always, then all the sudden it switched to HD widescreen. It's been a month or more since I watched it, but I think it may have been at some timed point in the plot. Almost like a gimick to say "hey, we're switching to HD". Then again it could just have been my local station took a minute to make the switch. (happens some times)

Anyway it's a welcome change. In fact I'm hoping the majority of shows switch to widescreen HD next year. :)

Scrubs is picked up for 2007, but will be shown as it was in 2006...double episodes starting sometime in January. The HD thing threw me off too, I usually tape it on the regular NBC but was flipping around during commericals and found it in HD OTA.

That was an NBC screw-up that only affected the West Coast feed. The first segment was in 4:3 -- it came back in HD after the first break. The start of the show was also missing -- it just sat there with an NBC logo on a black screen for about 15 seconds.

Oh, so the timing was just coincidental then. Oh well at least it's HD now. Like I said I'm hoping the majority of shows come back as HD next season. I plan on having two Series 3 units, at least one with a eSATA drive attached, so I should have plenty of space and tuners to get everything in HD. :)

Yeah, over in the AVSFORUM, East Coasters were excited to see it in HD, but then when it aired here in the West, NBC messed it up on the first segment. At least the rest aired in HD -- I would have been ticked if I had missed the "premiere!"

TWO Series 3s? Yowza! I'll be picking up one, that's for sure. Between that and the HR10-250, I should be covered for HD programming ... for now. :D

Well I currently have 6 SA TiVos and a MOXI DVR, so two S3 units will be a step down in number of available tuners. I'm actually considering possibly getting 3, but that's going to depend on how much they cost.

Then again all of my current TiVos, except one, have lifetime service. So they have pretty significant reslae value. Which means if I sell them I won't be too bad out of pocket on the S3 units.

So its finally in HD? Isn't this season pretty much over? I wonder why the wait.

I pretty much skipped this whole season due to schedule issues. Plus I've gotten obsessed over the box sets so the episodes are new to me when I watch the seasons dvds. But its nice to know they finally got the HD hint with this lovely funny show.

If you own a Tivo, the season ends only when you run out of recorded eps.
