View Full Version : stuttering on SOME channels - tivo or cable?

My Series2 has been stuttering for about a month - both live and recorded shows. I've rebooted, completely erased and restarted and opened it up to make sure everything was seated firmly. I still get stuttering though not as much since I completely delete shows now after watching them and am not letting stuff pile up for days/week on end without watching.

However, today I noticed something odd. I got stuttering on one channel, but not the other channels. It was really bad on the TBS station, but the channels right next to it (TNT and BET I believe) were fine, no stuttering. I flipped over to cable direct (bypassing the TiVo) and there was no stuttering at all. Back to TiVo and surfed around, and I experienced some stuttering seemingly randomly but very little compared to TBS.

Question: Is the stuttering a TiVo issue since I only see it when watching through the TiVo or bad signal from ComCast (but then why wouldn't I see it when viewing the cable only input?).

I always figured my hard drive was slowly dying (on my 2nd drive in 4 years) but now I'm thinking it migth be something else...?

thanks!

I would love to know the answer to this question, too. Same general problem in that it's not all channels, just some. For example, tonight TCM not only stuttered but actually changed screen "resolution" (slightly larger, a little crooked and out of focus) when it came back. Tried to watch "A Chorus Line" on Sunday on LOGO and had to quit because it was stuttering every other minute, and even rewind showed that there were missing pieces.

I am also a comcast subscriber and not yet on 7.3. Any ideas? thanks.

I am having the same problem, also with Comcast. For me, it seems to be primarily the network channels that have the stuttering. The channels that are cable only work fine. Today, I am having an even bigger issue in that they don't come in at all and the cable box keeps changing the channel, looking for a channel that comes in.

I originally thought it was the hard drive failing, but it seems odd that it is only certain channels. Is the signal different? Is it my cable box? I think I'm going to try to swap out the cable box and see if it is better with a different box.

It doesn't seem to be the cable signal, since I have it split and the signal that goes straight to the TV works fine.

I should follow up that quite often (about every other day) the stuttering gets to be so much that it freezes completely and I have to unplug the TiVo and restart it. I've been watching while this happened.

I've experience the above too, it skipping channels because it can't seem to "settle" or "find" a specific channel. The freezing seems to be a tivo problem. The stuttering/channel searching seems to be a cable problem... what's a tivo junkie to do?!

It could be you're not getting adequate signal strength perhaps due to splitting the feed. I had the same problem on one channel, called comcast, they came out put a signal booster/amp on it and it never happens anymore. Might want to look into a signal booster. The other thing that causes stuttering video is the early signs of a failing hard drive...
