1. It's gone for good. It ain't coming back.

2. It really depends on how many shows you watch, and whether you like keeping the shows or delete them once you watch them. If you want to save everything, the best best would be to get an upgraded box from a vendor like Weaknees (advertised on this site) because Tivo currently only goes up to 180 hours. I personally have an 80 hour unit, and that is plenty for me since I don't keep all my shows, but I do record a lot of episodes. Most average people, I would say 80 hours is plenty.

3. The price of Tivo's don't vary all that much between vendors. You can probably save 20 bucks if you shop around online or go to Best Buy or similar store, or you could look for bundled deals (like the Dell laptop deal right now). You can also get a refurbished 40 hour straight from Tivo for free with a year contract paid upfront. Last you can check Ebay and look for used Tivo's. I know some people who really prefer getting their Tivo's through Ebay because of the cost.

I would recommend the biggest tivo you can afford. I have a 40 hour tivo in my room and an upgraded 270 hour downstairs. It's awesome keeping entire seasons of comedies like the office and stuff on there and have them ready to go.

You definitely want more than 40 hours... and if you're someone who watches TV a fair amount and cares about video quality, you'll want 100s of hours, as Best quality recording takes up much more room. We record everything at basic and so even an 80 hour machine is more than enough. (Which is why one of ours has 160 hours or some such! :) )
