A couple of years ago I convinced my dad that he should have a DTivo. He got one and loves it but that first DVR39 had a hard drive failure within the warranty period and they just sent him a new one. I just got around to building a new hard drive for him using Instantcake and wondered if there is anything I need to do for activation other than calling Tivo and telling them I am adding a second unit for him. It has the original card in the slot in the front. Thanks. Just checking before I travel 500 miles up to visit bringing the repaired unit.

Adding the old box? They didn't want it back? You'd just call DirecTV to activate as normal. Does it have its original access card?

It has been a while but I think when I handled this for my dad I asked them if I could keep it. They didn't object.

Just to follow up and close this thread. I hooked up my dad's old DVR-39 with the new hard drive in it. Remember, I used InstantCake to load the basic software on the new drive. I called in to reactivate the old but new unit. The help desk had a little difficulty locating my dad's account because he had forgotten his password but eventually we worked that out. The new unit came to life just fine and indicated it would take two or three days to download all of the program info into the guide. We got all of his favorite programs loaded as season passes and moved the unit that was operating in his living room to his bedroom. Now my mom has her soap operas and cooking shows programmed into that one and my dad has all of his Fox News and Court TV shows on the living room one. Everyone seems pleased. So, if you get a bad hard drive in a unit don't abandon it. It can be saved. This is probably old stuff to most of you but a new experience for me.
