View Full Version : Decompression error

I have a bad A drive, and I am trying to restore from the original backup, which was tested and worked at the time.

Now when I follow the Hinsdale instructions for restoring, I get the message:

"Restore failed: decompression error .9% (98.02 compression)"

I have done a search and reviewed the posts on this issue, and the advice I have seen generally involves creating a new backup. That is not possible for me. Is there anyway to complete the restore and avoid or workaround the decompression error?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have noticed a lot of images made with compression level 6 won't restore. How bad is your old 'A' drive if you can get the PC to recognize it (try the freezer trick) you might give dd_rescue a chance otherwise you need a new image for your TiVo.

Thanks. There are some other issues with the original A drive that (unfortunately) won't let me use it.

I read some posts on the decompression issue that suggested that problems might be created by backing up on a computer with one processor and restoring with another. This would make sense considering that I did restore the backup and test it at the time it was created. It has been a while, but I think the backup would have been done on a P II and restoring was done a P III.

Two questions: 1. Does anyone know if the PII to PIII change does actually make a difference? 2. If so, is there a workaround, or do I have to go find a PII and restore from it?
