Hello all

I've searched the heck out of these forums and never really come close to anyone describing with some detail exactly how to connect my tivo to my PC using a crossover cable and then subsequently using the PC's wireless connection to connect the tivo online...

BAsically I have all the tools...I just need a more detail guideline..

I have:
A laptop running XP 2nd edition connected wirelessly to a router
I have a functioning USB ethernet adapter(Tivo shows Mac address)
1 crossover cable

These have been connected: Tivo-USB Ethernet adapter-crossover cable-Laptop USB input...Before anyone suggest it..the router is on the first floor Tivo is on the top floor..so no its not really that easy...

Laptop recognizes the cable and attempts some form of searching for connection but fails..stating Limited or No connectivity..

I have tried several variables using mish-moshed instructions from all over the net..but can not seem to finalize the deal...

Any techies with the answer please help...Thanks

Why are you trying to do this? I don't think you'll get any benefit from it. AFAIK, Tivo only supports peer-to-peer (what you're trying to set up) between two Tivo boxes, not between a Tivo and a PC. I've never tried it, but it couldn't hurt to go in Networking setup and tell Tivo it has a peer-to-peer connection.

Since you already have a wireless router, I'd just buy a Tivo wireless G adapter, hook it to the Tivo and be done with it ... :)

Is there any particular reason you want to do it this way, rather than just getting a USB wireless adapter for the Tivo, which would be easier & much more straightforward? You wouldn't have to keep the laptop tethered & on all the time.

What you are trying to do can be accomplished by:
1. Reconfigure your wireless LAN subnet. You'll have to go into the router's setup pages & change the subnet from the likely 192.168.0.x subnet to something else, e.g. 192.168.1.x. Will have to set the LAN IP of the router & check that the DHCP settings are appropriate. Any PCs connected including your laptop will have to get a new DHCP lease with the new subnet.

2. Turn on "internet connection sharing" on the laptop. Go to the wireless adapter properties, advanced page & you should find it. This will change your laptop wired adapter IP to 192.168.0.1 (which is why you'd have to do step 1, it won't let you otherwise), and let it route traffic on that net to the wireless net. Connect the Tivo, go into the network setup & it should be able to obtain a 192.168.0.x address at that point (if not, try rebooting, or maybe use static IP), & be able to make a net connection to Tivo's servers.

If the wireless router also has wired connections wouldn't it be better to use that?

And Stephen's method should work. Though I don't think it's necessary to change the existing IP addresses just us 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.2 for the wired adapter and the Tivo.

Okay, I glossed over that little fact. Then go wireless to the router instead of trying to go to the PC.

Hello all

Well the number one reason I wanted to do this was I am on the top floor router is on the bottom...I do not want to run a cable the distance...

secondly the wired method works faster and seemlessly' versus the wireless method whci is more suscpeitble to drops and delays... especially when transfering long programs...

Not to mention I already had the USb adapter and purchased the crossover for $8...this beats roughly $50 for a tivo based wireless config or some "almost" approved non-tivo wireless device...

When it came down to it I didnt waant to spend another dollar...I just upgraded a TIVO with a serious 400GB HD with lifetime(HUMAX)....Im spent people..

SO thats why...

I will try some of these methods mentioned...

In my tooling around I changed the IP addresses and so on but for whatever reason still couldn get it to work...any more suggestions please post...

Thanks

Hmm, both devices have a Link light? You've manually set an IP address on each device? It should be pretty straight forward. What are you trying to use, TiVo2Go? What does it do? Your not trying to connect to TiVo, are you? If yes, how is your laptop getting to the net?

Can you ping the TiVo from your laptop?

What the heck are you talking about?? You can transfer shows from TiVo to PC with TiVo2GO, use TiVo Desktop for music and photos...

Wireless would be MUCH slower transferring shows.

THere is NOTHING wrong with the OP trying to do this...

Trying to do this in Vista, would it be the same?
