With the New HD recorder of DirecTV will not be a TiVo base unit. With the mpeg2 going to mpeg4 so these HR10 will not receive any new style local or satellite signals. All above facts I believe we all can agree on, I ask if it best to buy or lease given these facts.

1.) I like / love TiVo interface.

2.) I will receive local HD by OTA.

3.) I don't really care about DirecTV HD channels other then HBO or Discovery.

So if own how long can I use it (will DTV kill or stop this unit) will DTV force an upgrade.

no one knows for sure, but the prevailing thought is that you should be good to go at least for another 2-3 years when DirecTVs contract with TiVo runs out.

definitely thru the 2009 contract..and as i believe OTA will be mpeg2 for a very very long time, i see no reason dTV wouldn't just keep selling us the guide data for 5 bucks a month.

I'll be using my 2 units this way for a very long time

Fat chance of that, but if you subscribe to Sunday Ticket, DirecTV may give you a free one. Check out this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=303111)

I don't what to go this way if it lease. I don't what them to replace this recorder because it's not a TiVo recorder. If it leased won't them force me to replace this TiVo?

Not that I have ever heard, in fact most are worried that they WON'T switch it out for free if we want them to

interesting question. They are sending out free HD receivers now even if you didn't request one. That's fact backed up by postings across these forums. and these plain receivers were definitely owned by people (someone please correct if i'm wrong). So if they are taking owned stuff and giving you another receiver you own...that's a good thing

Whether they will do that for leased HDtivos is truly unknown now. But if i had to bet, i'd say leased Hdtivos will be at a minimum offered a free/low cost swapout but if you turn that down, you'd pay full price for mpeg4 dvr.

I can't see them forcing a trade in for hdtivos, even leased. But if they own the equipment i'm betting legally they can force a tradein

I got off the fence, I purchased one for $399 from value electronics due his support of TiVo.
I felt this was best due to my love of TiVo my local OTA ability. So I standby to see how long any HD mpeg2 stays up on DirecTV. Tick Tick Tick...
