I have Directv and purchased a Directv/Tivo last year. My understanding at the time was that Directv was no longer selling DVRs with Tivo (which is why I was able to get it for free after rebate). My unit is a series 1, and now I would like to buy at least one and possibly two Series 2 Tivos.

Couple of questions:

Are Directv Series 2 Tivo recievers available? Or is Directv only offer receivers with their own DVR product.

If not, and I have to buy a separate tivo unit, can I still pay the $5.99 a month to Directv, or would I have to get a subscription to tivo instead?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

You won't get a TiVo based box from DirecTV. You need to look at Weaknees, Value Electronics or one of the other sponsors of this forum (or risk the eBay route).

Any D* receiver/DVR is the responsibility of D* as far as subscription is conccerned, so you will still just pay your $5.99 to D*.

What if I used a standard Directv receiver, and bought a separate tivo unit. Could I then cancel my Directv DVR service and pay tivo instead? I'd hate to pay more money, but it would be worth it to me to use tivo - I hate Directv's DVR interface.

Look for a D* TiVo based box. It has many advantages over the SA TiVo, like dual tuners (watch one channel while recording another or even record two channels and watch a third, pre-recorded show), digital recording and other factors. Not to mention it's $5.99 a month instead of $12.95 or more - and that's one fee for ALL the DVRs in the house, not just one.

I used a SA TiVo for a long time before upgrading to a DTiVo box and it was one of the best moves I ever made. I now have an HR10-250 High Def DVR/receiver with TiVo (which you CAN still get from D*), a SD box and an R15 (non-TiVo D*DVR).
