So a buddy of mine here at work finally bought an HDTV last week (a sweet 50" Panasonic Plasma). He has been with DTV for eight years and asked me what he needed to get HD on his new set.

Luckily, the set has a built-in HD tuner and I told him to plug in some rabbit ears and see what locals he could pick up. Sure enough, he was able to pull in all the local DFW area digital channels. Next, I told him about the greatness that is HD TiVo. He was reluctant to spend alot of money on this since he just dropped a few grand on the new set. So then I read the "Free (Mostly) HR10-250" thread where community members were getting a free HR10-250's for renewing or signing up for the NFLST package. He agreed to give it a shot, and here is what he got:

Free HR10-250
Free 3-LNB dish
Free OTA
Free install
Free HD package 6 months
$15/month off his bill for 6 months

He and I were both amazed! He didn't even have to sign up for the Sunday Ticket! All he had to do was agree to another 2 year agreement. He told me the retention rep told him he was one of their best customers(8 years of service with TC plus package) and she was very friendly, knowledgable, and explained everything to him about HD hardware, programming and the upcoming mpeg4 transition.

Needless to say, I am his new best friend for telling him how to get the best deal possible and who to call at DTV. :)

Why the 3lnb dish? Why not get the 5LNB?

Otherwise, awesome.

The 5LNB dish is not needed for the HR10-250 and D* won't install them unless needed. They weigh upwards of 34 lbs, so they need much more to mount. It's best to wait until you actually NEED the 5lnb dish, by which time a smaller version may be available.
