Hello All,
I have just recently purchased the PHILIPS DSR708 and I have VONAGE. Couldn't make it dial at all, so I went to my work, and activated the unit from a normal land line.
NOW I have been trying to make the NETWORKING option to work. CAN ANYONE here tell me if they have ACTUALLY made the NEWORKING OPTION work on this DVR via USB and if yes, HOW?
Details would be really appreciated. I have spent two days looking on this forum, but could not find anything which would suggest how to make this unit work over a NETWORK.

Go to the Tivo Underground board on this site. It is all there. Or go to the upper right hand portion of this page and click.

He's referring to the forum sponsors in that section of the forum.

Thanks everyone for your input. I went ahead and bought PTV's
InstantCake for Series2 DirecTiVo Units (6.2)
PTVnet Utility CD for select Series2 DirecTV DVR Systems (6.2)
As I understand from JERRY K and PTV's website, this will enable all the COOL TIVO features, including my two USB ports and I will be able to attach a USB to ETHERNET adapter which will make the TIVO network ready.
After this, I can make the DVR use network to dial out instead of a LAND BASED phone line. Correct?

Maxx: You won't even need to dial into Directv anymore with those enhancements. Mine runs a script called "Fakecall.tcl" which fools the unit into thinking it calls into Directv each night.
Plus, if you order your PPV movies via the Directv site, they will send them to all the Tivo units in your home instead of just the one if you ordered via remote control.

See the issue is a little more complex. I cannot ACCESS the directv site with my account, since my account is via ATT Home Entertainment, since that is the option I had to use, since I live in a apartment building, and my Patio does not face south.
I like PPV, and therefore would like to have that option. So, once again, can it use NETWORK for everything it would have used for DIALUP or not?

That does complicate things a bit. If the unit can't dial in your PPV orders and you don't use the Directv.com website to order your PPV's, you will eventually be locked out from using PPV once your access card fills up.

If it locks you out due to too many PPV purchases, just take it to a phone line and let it call in.
Or pay the $12 for lifeline phone service.

I wish it was that cheap here for phone service.
12 dollars won't even cover taxes on the most basic phone line here
