my parents Samsung(same as in my sig) lost its second tuner and I have a chance to get a Philips 704 for them. they bought a 160 gig replacement drive from weaknees for the Samsung a few months ago but never installed it. it was an "in case of emergency" drive. is it possible they could use this drive in the Philips(for the extra space) or do you actually need a drive especially for the Philips? if I did use the Samsung drive whats the worst that could happen?

You could use InstantCake or MFSTools to take the image that's already on the 704 and put it onto the weaknees drive. That way the Philips would still have the correct version on it.

thanks for the reply. how hard would it be to copy the image over to the weaknees drive? I've never done anything like that before.
if I installed the Samsung configured drive into the Philips it would display Samsung instead of Philips in the system menu and such, correct?

The drive should work just fine if it is the only drive in the system. You may need to do a "clear and delete everything" after installing the drive.

it would be the only drive in the unit. I would remove the 40gig drive and put in the 160gig.

That should work fine. Run the C&DE after it boots up.

ok, I installed the drive, did the clear & delete everything and the drive works except for the fact that it does in fact display Samsung in the menus. my parents didn't care so I left it in.
one thing that was strange though was that after I installed the drive they lost all their locals which meant giving DTV a call to get them back.

That's the one thing I forgot about. Sometimes the model number won't change.
I'm glad it is working for you.
