I recently purchased a used HDVR2 and just tried to activate it. When it boots up, it finds the satellite and then starts to download. Unfortunately it hangs at 70% and even if I let it sit for 24 hours, it will not finish the download. I have tried the process at least five times with the same result each time.

Has anyone seen this problem before and is it fixable? I am a noob, so I haven't searched the archives yet. Just lookin' for some help.

This may be an old problem with a bad release of the software. What version of software is running on it?

Try the following:
1) Unplug the DirecTiVo and the satellite lines
2) Plug back in the DirecTiVo power
3) When it says it can not find a signal select "I will fix it later"
4) Reconnect the satellite lines.

If it is not running 6.2 connect the DirecTiVo to the phone and let it download the new software.

It looks to be running an older verson of software but I don't know how to find out. What is the procedure to find out software version?

Check under system information.

The Software ver. is 3.1.1. If I just leave it connected to the telephone line will the 6.2 upgrade automatically download? I haven't been able to activate the thing because of the Tivo refusing to download all of the satellite information.

It should update to at least 3.1.1c2. Hook it up to the phone line and force a phone call. If the phone call takes about an hour it has downloaded new software and the status line should say pending restart. Go ahead and restart the unit and it will install the software.

If you have some knowledge of how to build your own computer, that blank HDVR2 should be thought of as a great enabler for you to enter the world of TiVo hacking.

Check out this $20 product from PTVUpgrade: <link> (http://downloads.ptvupgrade.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=UBCD-11&Category_Code=) . It will kick-start your hacking experience like nothing else I've ever seen.

Once you've got 6.2 onto your HDVR2, run "The Zipper", which you can download from this community, and you'll be in business.

If you need help you'll find it in abundance in this community's Upgrade Center and Underground forums. First, though, have a read through this excellent document: <link> (http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html). Your goal should be to become a good member of the community by running each of your questions through as much of the "Before You Ask" checklist as possible.

Good luck!

This was a common problem with the old software you have (several years old in fact). Just do what rminsk said and you should be ok. Once you activate it, it will down load the new software with in a few days. You may want to let the CSR know that you need a software up date maybe they can flag it to update sooner.

You may want to let the CSR know that you need a software up date maybe they can flag it to update sooner. The DirecTiVo will update to whatever version is in the database for that unit. A CSR can not flag a unit to update. I think 6.2 is still rolling out so the OP will either get 3.1.1c2 or 6.2 depending what is slated in the database.
