View Full Version : HDVR2 - Second Tuner Pixleation
Hey Everyone... first post, so please don't flame me...
I have an HDVR2 that I added a second drive to a couple years ago... OK, over the past 6 months I've noticed that certain channels when viewed on the second tuner are just not watchable. They pixlate and lock up. I know that my dish is pointed fine.. etc, as I have other tuners that have no problems. So.. I thought I had a bad drive. I bought a new drive, Instant Caked it.. and powered up. System works good with the new drive, but the same issue with the second tuner. I changed my settings to use only one tuner and the channels are fine.. but obviously this is not how I want to continue.
ok... so does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to get another HDVR2 from ebay, but it sounds like these are starting to give a lot of people problems these days...
Thanks!

Have you tried swaping the input cables? If the problem changes tuners when you do that, then you know it's a cable issue.

If it stays with the tuner and not the cable, then you seem to be encountering what has happened to several people with HDVR2's - the second tuner is failing.
This happened to me, and it steadily got worse to the point it could actually hang the unit.
I ended up replacing it with one of the last non-R10 new units from Weaknees.
I've had this problem off and on for the last several months. It's input 2 in my case, and I've actually replaced several cables just to convince myself that the problem is indeed the HDVR2.
Has anyone had any experience with contacting DTV and asking about a replacement? I know they don't offer the HDVR2 anymore, so what would they offer me instead?

Thanks for the info folks... I thought I was seeing a rash of HDVR2's with issues in the past few months... fishy that it was about the same time that DirecTV dumped Tivo... hmmmm...
Well, I'm gonna grab a replacement.. but I want a true Tivo DirecTV unit. Any suggestions? I see that ptvupgrade sells a refurb phillips box (which is supposed to be the same as the hughes hdvr2) are these decent? I figure I need about 2 years until I can get an OTA HD Tivo box.. then life will be good. Love my HD.. but not going to spend a monthly fee for any thing yet.

Ironically, everyone who I've seen mentioning the Bad Tuner 2 problem seems to have the HDVR2. It was the first of the "Series 2" DirecTiVo units out the door - I wonder if its an indication of a manufacturing defect that was (hopefully) corrected in later models...
My DVR-80 spontaneously rebooted Sunday. Looks like its time to replace the drive/zipper it. Maybe I can do the same to the HDVR2 and use it as a remote viewing station only... :)

We lost a tuner on one of our HDVR2 units a few months ago also.

They'll probably set you up with an R-10 or 15.

Thanks for the reply.
Ugh. Well, from what I've read, I don't want an R-10 or 15, so I think I'll just swap the unit with the bad tuner for my 2nd HDVR2 that's currently in the master bedroom. We can run the bedroom unit on a single tuner -- it works fine with only one input -- and then we'll have the fully functional unit in the living room.
I suppose I could order one of the DSR704s from ptvupgrade too. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about those?
I've also read in other threads that some people have trouble convincing DTV that they own any new units that they buy, as opposed to having one that is leased. Does that apply to the DSR704s too, or is the lease snafu just with the HDTV DTivos?
