Our R10 has started recording stuff on its own. Yesterday, it recorded a tennis match. Today, a soccer match. It has never done that before. For some reason, it thinks we want to record sporting events. I have Suggestions turned off. What else could cause this?

Is there an icon to the left of the program entry in Now Playing? What does it look like?

As far as I know, the only possible explanation is that someone in your household set them up to record -- by accident, I assume.

I say this because whenever you choose to record a particular show for the first time, TiVo automatically gives it one thumb up -- I also assume that, since it sounds like you don't watch sports, no one in your household had previously given a thumbs-up to tennis or soccer.

I am the only person that operates this TiVo. Must be something else. If it happened once, I could say, OK, I must have pushed the wrong button. But, two days in a row? It would never happen. Gremlins?

I didn't ask what you see on the program info screen, but rather what is to the left of the program title in Now Playing. If nothing, then it's a recording you asked for somehow. That there's one thumb up supports that, as you get that when you ask for a recording.

For months now when we leave for work in the morning (approx 600am)
we have noticed the TIVO record lights on. It is a channel we never watch. I have even removed it from our available list, it re-appears. It is not in our "to-do list". It does not appear in the on TIVO list after recording. My whole reason for signing onto this site, is to see if others are experiencing the same issue. If this is what I think it is, it stinks !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not a "Chicken Little", "Big Brother Nut", but you would have to be stupid to think there is not some at least some corperate use at work.

Just about ready to sell my "TIVO" stock and buy a simple DVR.

Tom, what channel is it? TiVos do record special content that does not show up in Now Playing - service data and videos for showcases. This is a normal aspect of all TiVos.

What do you "think it is"?

No reason to go "NSA" on us, it isn't the government using the built-in web cam in every TiVo to record interesting video from your home, by the way your couch is brown isn't it?

All the shows I record have green balls because I always use save until I delete.

I joined this forum specifically for this issue. I have a brand new HDTV TiVo DirecTV unit (one of the last ones made before DirecTV dropped TiVo), and am getting unwanted recordings (like Dr. Phil--whatever that is). I'd sure like to avoid having to erast as many as a dozen garbage recordings every day. Help!

Look in the manual under Suggestions...

My "DirecTV HD DVR User's Guide" has no such section, and the "Troubleshooting" chapter doesn't cover this.

However, I think I've found the problem. I have three DirecTV receivers, including two TiVos. But I only have three satellite antenna feeds--he split one of the two feeds that connect into the HD TiVo to connect a non-TiVo DirecTV receiver. The output from that receiver is unpredictable, and when the TV hooked to it is getting off-the-air TV signals, it seems to influence the behavior of the TiVo's recording choices.

DirecTV is supposedly sending a service person to install either another dish with four LNBs or some kind of upstream splitter, as they say that I have an "incomplete" installation. We'll see!

BTW, my model is HR10-250.

He meant to turn off the suggestions option.

FWIW these are TiVO's best guesses as to what you may want to watch based on your viewing history and how you give out thumbs (  ) to various programs. These recordings are first removed when the tivo starts to fill up. If it records something you don't like give it a thumbs down.

I'll bet he says it was fine unless they really want to give you a new dish.

Thanks--"Suggestions" is now off--"Thumbs Up" on the advice!

The jury is still out on the new dish.

Amazing how someone can google for 'tivo' and find this website but can't quite figure out how to google for 'turn off suggestions tivo'. :)

Assuming they know what suggestions are. DirecTV ships a difficult to read version of the user manual that doesn't go into as much detail on the features as TiVo's manuals do.

I guess one must first know what the term "suggestions" means to plug it into a search engine. The DirecTV TiVo manual index has no entries under that term. After looking at nearly every index entry, one may find "TiVo Suggestions." However, the two references indexed do not indicate that the "suggestions" initiate automatic recording. But Ah-Ha! Within one of two those references is another reference that is not indexed. Buried in that section ("Tour 4: Find New Programs") is the statement, "As an added bonus, when the HD DVR has available space, it may [emphasis mine] automatically record TiVo's Suggestions."

I regret that my 19 years of schooling and 40 years as a corporate executive didn't intuitively lead me to this fundamental understanding of this great system!

Yeah I agree the DTivo manual leaves much to be desired. Think I tossed mine in the garbage along with the box the tech left after the install.
