I was sent a replacement R15 and swapped the hard drives but when I try to play my recorded programming it says expired access card. It works fine on any newly recorded stuff but the stuff from when the hard drive was in the other unit won't play. Is there any way around this? I still have the other unit. Can I somehow connect the two with a USB cable and transfer the content? Or can I put the hard disk in one of my computers and move the stuff around? I really can't believe that I must loose all of my recordings... just because the tuner is acting up in the first unit... And dtv wonders why they're hated...
Help Please
Tom

Rread in the upgrade center for links to tools to copy your drive contents from one drive to another. You're gonna have to learn a bit if you've never taken a computer apart before.

Do you have an R15 or an R10? (Non-TiVo vs TiVo)
If you do have an R15... check over at www.dbstalk.com (at least post there, as I think you are one of the first to try this moving the hard drives between two units.... )
With at least the R15, no you can transfer programs between two units via USB

Why? Because a piece of electronic equipment starts to fail?
Tell that to the next College student that works all night on a paper, and the hardrive/laptop fails....
It happens...
If you are going to blame someone... blame Murphy (and his Laws)

You're taking a hard drive out of one unit and sticking it in another unit, it doesn't work so you hate dtv for this ?

Maybe flamers should learn to read before they post...
I'm obviously upset that DTV doesn't provide a way to retain my recorded content in the event that I have a problem with my DVR...
When I use my computer I backup on anther hard drive and another computer so if there is a problem with my computer I don't lose all of my files (don't you?). But even though a dvr is really a basic computer as well, DTV doesn't provide a way to back up!!
Is that clear enough for you?
I'll bet you don't respond to this post...

toys: Want to know why they don't provide such a utility? Can you imagine the sheer amount of support calls that would be generated? They'd go broke hiring enough employees to handle the onslaught of calls.
[edit] - come to think of it, they do provide a backup utility - it's called "Save to VCR".
TV programs are not like valuable (and in some cases un-replaceable) computer data.
It's just TV!

Well tell me how to replace this entire season of American Idol?
And a documentary about wolves that was on Discovery about 5 months ago?

LOL .... American Idol? What a waste of bandwidth that show is. Dr. Phil told us so. :)
Buy the documentary from Discovery channel.

I'm sure that's how you will feel if this happens to you.
Oh and if everyone bought the programming "there would be no tivo"

3 words ... 'save to VCR'
All kidding aside... you already know who won American Idol this season, why would you want to watch the entire season knowing the ending? That would be like watching last year's Superbowl.

You still have vcr's...lolllolllol
I only have DVD burners but even with the increased capacity there is probably 35 DVD's worth of recordings I'd have to back up and that is only since January...
If I were to do that I would just record on DVD to begin with.
Now why don't you grow up and don't reply unless you have something constructive to say.
Or better yet get a job to occupy your endless free time.

DTV is the company that designed the software so you can't transfer the drive from one unit to another and still play your existing recordings. DTV is the company that doesn't provide a utility so customers who have a legitimate reason to use the drive from one unit in another unit can't do it. DTV doesn't provide a way to use the USB ports to backup recordings and/or settings.
Hate may be a strong word but DTV gets 100% of the blame since there isn't any way the customer to backup their recordings.

OK toys, apart from the fact that you're in the wrong forum, I'll bet you never had too many friends growing up, did you?
First, to blame D* because you may "loose" your recordings is crazy. Electronic equipment breaks. That's it's ultimate function. If you're not prepared for it, you lose. End of story. You can't blame D* for that!
Second, it may have a Linux OS and be programmable, but a DVR is NOT a computer.
Third, if ANYTHING is that important, be it AI or your college class on the educational benefits of Spongebob Squarepants, then archive it to DVD. That's what was being suggested using the Save to VCR function.
Fourth, you haven't been here long enough to start insulting the regulars. You have to have at least 20 posts for that! :D

I think there is enough flaming in this thread.
