I need to upgrade our RCA40 D* Tivo unit. The 35 hours are just not enough and I don't want an R15. I checked out Weaknees.com and it looks like its $119 for a hard drive.

Questions?

-Is this hard drive an addition to the one currently on there? I don't want to lose the stuff the wife has recorded on there.

-How long does it take (following instructions of course  ) to put in this hard drive.

-Once its in, is there anything besides rebooting that needs to be done in order for it to recognize the new hard drive?

-And, should I get the optional ($19) fan/advanced cooling kit mentioned on the Weaknees site (its listed where you add the hard drive to you cart)?

I appreciate any and all responses...thanks!

The Weaknees drive is a main drive. Adding to your system does nothing unless you tell your system that it is there. That will require removing your current drive and running some tools against it.

I suggest you check out the upgrade section. Pull your drive and copy the contents to a new drive. You don't lose your current shows and you always have your original drive as a backup. You also save money by not having to buy an advanced cooling kit.

Pulling the drive is easy. I swapped drives on my HR10-250 in under 10 minutes. Now, I was just replacing a bad drive and not copying the contents. That will add a few hours to your process.

Weaknees offers two upgrades.
Add a drive, you keep the original in there, all programming and settings are kept intact,
or replace the drive with 1 or 2 bigger ones, that option would lose all your shows, season passes, thumbs up/down, favorite channels, etc are lost.-How long does it take (following instructions of course  ) to put in this hard drive.
I haven't personally upgraded, but shouldn't take longer than 20-30 minutes max.

I browsed the upgrade instructions, looks like you just turn it on and it's ready to go.

I would.
Fans that come with the units arent' the best to begin with, add an extra drive and it's going to get hot in there, cheap insurance IMHO.
Clicking "yes" get you two new fans, one to replace the original noisy one, and another to provide extra cooling for the extra hard drive, well worth $19 I think.
