I upgraded my TiVo-branded Series 2 40-hr (24004x) by adding a 120 GB Seagate drive a couple of years ago, and all was bliss. Then came the 7.2 software update, followed immediately by freezes and reboots galore. I thought it was just software for a while, but the patch didn't work, and now TiVo is dead.
Turns out the (120 GB) B drive is the culprit. Now I can't even get it to spin up, so I can't even copy everything over to my shiny new 120 GB Seagate. My plan now is to keep the 2-drive configuration (original 40 GB drive A + new drive B), probably using my old backup image from a couple of years ago. That said, I've got a couple of questions that I haven't found definitive answers for:
1) Has anyone had success with (or even tried) the "-E" option for mfsbackup? I'd like to try and create another backup image from drive A alone, so as not to lose my settings/season passes from the last couple of years. I've read that this option allows one to attempt to do so, but I haven't seen any reports of its successful use.
2) Once I'm ready to restore the backed-up image (new or old) to the 40 GB drive, does it matter that it's got all kinds of crap on it already? Or do I need to re-format it first? (I think the answer is that it doesn't matter, but I want to make sure I haven't skipped reading some important step; the how-tos out there seem to be written with brand new target drives in mind.)
3) I've read that there may be issues with the power draw from the Seagate 7200.9 drives. Any known issues combining a 120GB drive with an original-stock 40GB drive in a model 240xxx?
4) I think I know the answer to this, but just in case: If I just tried using mfsadd to combine the brand-new drive with drive A without restoring a single-drive backup first, that's not going to work at all, is it? Yeah, just checking.
Thanks for any help, and I'll report back if I find out anything interesting.
