View Full Version : Series 2 re-upgrade: Advice needed

I've spent quite a while poring over these forums and searching the web in an attempt to find out how to upgrade my Series 2 TiVo appropriately. I've found lots of good information, but some of it is unclear or even contradictory. I'd appreciate any help in answering some questions (below).

My existing standalone Series 2 TiVo started life as a 40-hour unit, and I upgraded it once before by installing an 80GB drive. I have now purchased a 300GB drive, and want to do another upgrade. Here are my questions:

1) I've run into the infamous mfsadd "nothing to add" issue. It appears that (unless I want to upgrade the partition table by hand) in order to upgrade I'll need to abandon my existing recordings. Is that correct?

2) I found lots of contradictory stuff about swap size. When upgrading to the 300GB drive, should I increase my swap size? (PTVupgrade's site says that for Series 2 units, anything >127MB is unnecessary; but other sites say otherwise.)

3) If I do increase the swap size with mfstools, I believe I need to then use tpip to get the size of the swap partition corrected in the partition table (or some such). Will running tpip from the (PTV) upgrade CD while my drive is in my PC do that properly? If so, exactly what tpip options should I use? (Note that a couple of options are undocumented on the tpip page.)

Thanks for any help/clarification.

1) I've run into the infamous mfsadd "nothing to add" issue. It appears that (unless I want to upgrade the partition table by hand) in order to upgrade I'll need to abandon my existing recordings. Is that correct?Right. There's an ugly workaround, but you don't want to know. Best to save any shows you want to save by copying them to your PC.2) I found lots of contradictory stuff about swap size. When upgrading to the 300GB drive, should I increase my swap size? (PTVupgrade's site says that for Series 2 units, anything >127MB is unnecessary; but other sites say otherwise.)Two schools of thought (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=3825639#post3825639). Follow the link and read to understand the issues and tradeoffs.3) If I do increase the swap size with mfstools, I believe I need to then use tpip to get the size of the swap partition corrected in the partition table (or some such). Jamie,

Thanks for the links. I've read the two schools of thought, and I guess I'll have to make a decision about which way to go.

If I go with swap >127MB, I'll need to use tpip. So I still have (at least) one question:

The -1 and -2 options for tpip are undocumented. Can anyone tell me what they mean?

The -1 and -2 options for tpip are undocumented. Can anyone tell me what they mean?Keep in mind that the bugs are not documented. See this (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=3085168&&#post3085168) for a description of the bug workarounds.

-1 forces tpip to treat your disk as a series 1 disk. -2 forces tpip to treat your disk as a series2 disk. Ordinarilly you don't need to use these options, but as part of the bug workaround you do.

I believe that the PTVupgrade disk may still have the 1.1 version of tpip. What that version, you use --swapped, not -1.

The current version of the bootcd should have tpip version 1.2 on it... if anyone verifies otherwise, please let me know and I'll unwrap, update and respin the ISO...
