I'm upgrading a DSR7000, swaping the old standard drive that came with it to a larger 80GB Maxtor. The old drive was two years old but was having stuttering problems which I figured probably meant there were some bad sectors on the drive. Since I don't have a FAT32 drive and I wanted to attempt to keep my setting (don't really care about the recordings), I decided to simply copy the old drive to the new drive using dd
When reading the upgrade instructions from Weeknees, I couldn't totally understand what they were talking about how/where to plug in the drives on the PC. I put the new replacement drive on as the secondary master (hdb) and the old drive as secondary slave (hdd).
In the process of doing dd, a couple of things went wrong. First, dd reported bad sectors and returned a command prompt. The instructions say to run dd with the noerror option if this happens, which I did. After about an hour, dd reported the bad sectors again but without returning a command prompt. After a few hours of letting it work, I got impatient(shame on me) and I unplugged the whole shebang, jumpered the new drive to master and stuck it in Tivo.
You already know what happened. It stuck on "Powering up". So, I have a good idea of what went wrong, but since dd takes so long and I have so little time, I want to do it right the next time.
1. Do I really need to put the new drive into the Primary Master Slot on my computer when doing dd?
2. If the old drive has bad sectors, is this going to work at all or should I just give up and start with BlessTivo? What am I going to lose besides my shows and my subscriptions. How much of a pain in my posterior is it going to be?
3. If this is going to work, then what do I do when I hit an error? How do i fix it?
Thanks in advance for the help.
