This thread is to help people who
Have not got their HD Box yet
Are thinking about getting Sky HD
Understand how Sky HD interacts with Tivo, and how to get the best out of Sky HD Using Tivo
Tivo Performance
Tivo quality is massively improved when connected to Sky HD. The banding that appeared on deep colours is gone. IMHO, there is very little difference between HD and Tivo on my 50" Plasma. Sound however from the Tivo is only stereo and you need a good Amp to upscale this to THX(orDolby)PL2, whereas the Sky box can be THX providing sky broadcasts it
The Tivo happily controls the HD box, without any issues using Pace 20017 - medium.
Operating the two systems
The really good news is that you can still operate your Tivo and get all of the great EPG functions etc... AND
Operate Tivo exactly as you do now
Play a recording on Tivo AND Record on Tivo AND record a Sky or HD channel at the same time
This means you get the same features of Sky+ of being able to record two channels and still watch another recorded one. There are small limitations on how this is done... but IMO nothing major. As long as aditional programs to be recorded by one of the SKy HD tuners is scheduled in advance, Tivo just carries on as normal.
Additionally, as Sky+ HD has the ability to have a 1 hour Live buffer, this can be utilised if you have run out of the 30 mins buffer on Tivo... I would only do this if I was desperate... but it can be done!
Another advantage of using the Tivo is that the less you have to do with the Sky interface the less likely it will be to lockup! There are many bugs and deficiencies with the HD box at the moment ... but not with Tivo.
Overall, their will be people who want to just Live with the Sky box, but for people who want to keep the maximum functionality from their Tivo, this is all great news
Tivo now
Has a better picture
inconjunction with the HD box provides better functionality than before
You automatically increase the size of your Tivo (and Sky HD) recording space
Of course there are variations on how much you choose to use the Tivo...and how much you choose to use the Sky+ HD.... and you can just chooe this yourself.
I am really happy with this new combination.
It goes without saying that the HD picture is excellent, so in every way I have gained... but the main thing is that I keep my Tivo working and do not have to use the Sky EPG too much :D
