View Full Version : No lifetime grandfathering to a DT or Series 3

I just got off the phone with TiVo to confirm that an old lifetime unit I picked up was indeed a grandfathered unit activated on 1/14/2000. The CSR confirmed it qualifies, but I can only transfer it to a series 2 single tuner, not to a DT, or to the upcoming Series 3. He was adamant about this.

Did you mention what Stephen had said in this post:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=290723

Grandfather transfer: The one-time "Grandfather transfer" (for people who purchased Product Lifetime on or before January 21, 2000 [as in, more than six years ago], and who have not already used their one-time transfer) is still allowed and will also be honored for future hardware releases from TiVo, such as the Series3.

This topic has been covered several times on this forum. The CSR is wrong. If you can't get a CSR to do this for you then contact TiVoOpsMgr to get this problem resolved.

This is the answer I was hoping for.

Tell the CSR

If you have any trouble when you call, please mention KDB code 09-07-04 to the agent

For the grandfathered lifetime transfer please correct me if I am wrong on this.

A box that had lifetime service activated before 1/20/2000 can be transferred to a new owner without issue. It can still then have that service transferred to a new box provided that the service wasn't already transferred to a newer box.

I just picked up an old S1 on ebay that the owner said he activated in Sept 1999. I am assuming that I can then transfer the service to a S2 DT or the S3 when it comes out, right?

That is what we have all been led to believe. I would get that old S1 in your name. Doing that shouldn't eat up the hardware transfer (but I am not sure). There are a lot of crooks on ebay.

It'll most likely cost you 300 bucks xtra to buy a S3 unit with out a service contract. So what's the point? :(

And you could resell it on ebay a couple years later and recoup that same $300. Same old arguments. :)

The agent is wrong. Speak to a supervisor or get the agent's name and send me an e-mail if you encounter any problems after having them check the knowledge article cited here.

The agent is wrong.

Once again, the definitive answer. :)
