Is there any way to stop TIVO from recording what it thinks I want to record and watch. It seems to have a mind of it's own.

Please Advise, Thanks, Art

You're talking about Suggestions, which can be deactivated by going into Messages & Setup and selecting Suggestions.

Also, there's a good reason for leaving suggestions on -- they're the only way to have even a vague estimate of how much free space there is on your Tivo... If you've got hours of suggestions recorded, then you usually don't have to worry about any of your recordings being deleted by new recordings you made.

(To be clear, suggestions NEVER delete your recordings..)

This is no longer the case, Recently Deleted also serves the same purpose if suggestions are off.

The question I have is why turn them off. The TiVo now changes back to the channel it was on before the suggestion and never bumps a show for a suggestion so why do people still turn them off?

1. Because I can.

2. Because I hate the concept of a computer selecting TV shows for me based on listing data and "thumb" buttons!

3. Because Season Passes fill up the HD anyway.

Nothing more aggrivating in my mind then to be watching something like the Ballgame (one of the only things I watch Live) and have it try to switch over to another channel to start recording. It seems it happens always at a key point in the game.

I agree. Especially since I'm typically at my computer listening but not watching until something interesting happens so I don't see the on-screen prompt till it's too late.

Ok I guess that makes sense. I never watch anything completely live so I do not have a problem with that. I do watch baseball and football semi live, meaning I start watching before they end and usually catch up to live before the game ends. I do not always catch up before the end so I always have it recording with padding just in case.

If I watched things without recording them I could see suggestions bothering me. I used to once in a great while get annoyed with suggestions when I left the TiVo on CNN and found it on a different channel later, but now that the TiVo changes back to its starting channel after a suggestion I have no problems with them.

Is that really the case? My deleted folder does not seem to keep things there for very long. They tend to disappear even when I have not recorded anything lately. They will be there and then "poof" they will be gone.

Same here. I had 34 deleted recordings in my deleted folder last night, and nothing saved on my Tivo at all(I had transferred everything to my PC) and when I turned on my TV this morning, Tivo had recorded 4 suggestions and my deleted folder was empty.

OK. From a technical perspective this behaviour makes sense. it just wasn't what I thought Tivo had implmented. So sorry I was wrong.

In my case, I have them turned off so that my NPL doesn't get full. I have S1 DirecTV DVRs and they don't have folders.

It doesnt bother me that Tivo does do that though, because I will have already transferred what I wanted to keep to my PC already, just I like to have suggestions on, to know my HDspace on the Tivo. I usually maintain around 15 or so Tivo recordings, and when some or all of them go away without me watching them, I know its time to start transferring/watching what I recorded.

I wasn't saying you were wrong at all, just some Tivo's may act differently then others when it comes to the service upgrades.

I see threads related to dual tuner Tivo's rebooting at any time, I have yet to experiance that once yet, again leading credence to the fact that every Tivo acts differently then others.

This is why it is so important to hit the record button when you've settled on watching a Live TV show. Not only does it prevent switching for recording 'suggestions', but it will also alert you if it is going to conflict with something else an hour from now.
'course i've been guilty of not doing this myself...and been disappointed when the buffer catches up and I realize that I missed a channel change during a pause (ie laundry run, etc)
