Because I have the Comcast POS (which didn't record the Alias finale) I plan to be one of the first in line to buy the S3.

Tell me if this makes sense:

I will split the cable two ways: 1. Directly into the S3 with 2 cable cards. 2. To a standard cable box for VOD and to watch HD when the 2 tuners on the S3 are recording. Both inputs on into my Samsung will be HDMI.

I REALLY hate the Comcast 3412 STB. I hope this new configuration will work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

assuming two HDMI inputs on the TV then yes.

the cable cards need just one cable hookup to get to the digital stream and decrypt them as needed. The series 3 will not do the VOD service so it is smart to factor that in with a cable box if you use that service.

That'll work fine.

My only suggestion would be to get one multi-stream CableCard (if available in your area) rather than two single-stream cards. Should also be cheaper too.

You've got plenty of time to plan your TV setup, it'll be about 6 months or so before the S3 comes out.

Instead of watching "live" TV via the cable box while recording 2 shows, why not just watch a recorded program off the S3?

It's actually the wife factor - she watches the "man hater channel: aka Lifetime and other girly channels!

Ahhh got it. I wouldn't want to record that type of programming on my TIVO either. :D

Actually, TIVO's on every TV in my house is part of the WAF. She refuses to watch "live" TV now. She tends to record her programming on the bedroom TIVO to spare me when she wants to watch the "girlie" shows. :)

Assuming your tv is DCR (has a cable card input) and you don't care about VOD you can get rid of the cable box altogether, right? That's what I am going to do.

same kind of setup. I have the 240 TiVo with lifetime in the bedroom and even named it with my wife's name. then with the DT downstairs MRV is super fast and really suits our need of watching any show on either floor.

the kids have a SD H400 in the bonus room so they can play DVDs as well.

Although that's a good idea, but VOD is probably a must, therefore the (non dvr) cable box

Oh, did I mention how much I hate the Moto 3412? I'm on my 4th one - and just dealing with it until the S3.

If you are happy with the TiVo recording basic cable, yes.
If you want the TiVo you have now to record digital cable, you need a cable box.

You're saying that the cable card will only deliver standard cable, not digital cable.? It that's true, then it's definitely a cable box fo me.

Thanks,

Not at all, the whole point the cable card is that it provides the decryption for the digital channels.

But not VOD, so that's the hook for a MSO box.

Correct, no VoD with cable card. My plan once I get my series3 is to have my HD cable box on a seperate input to the TV so I can VoD if I ever get that bored.
