View Full Version : World Cup Scheduling

I'm just going thru the tivo.com online scheduling and setting up the matches I want to record for the upcoming WORLD CUP soccer.
I thought it would have been cool for Tivo to have a WorldCup section appear on our Tivo's GUI with all the matches available. I think they did something similar for a prior olympics...did they not? (ie choose which olympic events to record).
Of course, maybe it's too much of a hassle to get that working considering all the difft channels showing different games.

Yeah, a World Cup showcase would be a neat idea. Not sure what's invovled, if anything, regarding licsensing or anything like that for that event. I know the Olympics are very, very, very protective of the name "Olympics" and don't want any one to use it without their apporval. (I hope this post doesn't get me in trouble!! ;) )

I just setup an auto-record wishlist for the USA. So I'm not that concerned when they come on or what channel.

heh..spoken like a true American :) But there are many great teams which
make for good Soccer games. Then again, I watch soccer year round, not just during WorldCup time.
Also, some games are being shown on both hd channels and sd. So if you have a hd receiver hookedup to your Tivo, you'll want to get the nice 16:9 aspect on the games by recording the proper channel. Speaking of which...weird that the USA first round game is only being carried by espn2, rather than a ABC HD. doh well.

I think ABC is only carring games on the weekends, the first USA game is on a Monday.

Yeah..I think it's pretty sad that non-weekend games are not being broadcast in HD. Even ESPN's HD channel just basically shows "SportsCenter" all day.
I think they are misjudging the popularity this event will receive.

I agree with you, I think a lot of people are going to be watching and paying more attention to the games this time.
I was at the USA vs Venezuela game in Cleveland this past weekend, and it was very exciting to see almost 30,000 fans supporting the team.
Although I agree that watching the games in HD would be great, I think I'm going to stick with Univision, there you get two shows in one, the game itself plus listening to the commentators, it doesn't get much more colorful than those guys! :)
I can't wait!!

Well, we Americans do have to support our own team first. But that doesn't mean we won't be watching the other games. Especially this year, the USA is in a pretty tough group. I'll be pleased if we make it to the second round, but I expect the more fun games to watch will not be ones the USA is in, unfortunately.

Because Word Cup games have a unique title (I think it was World Cup Soccer, or something similar and not just Soccer), its easy to setup a ARWL for each country you want to see. This is the best way to do it so you don't miss any of your favorite clubs. I don't have HD channels, so I have no issues with it being on multiple channels.

Where do you get that? My understanding is that all the games will be shown in HD.

Well, thats what I was hoping for....but it doesn't appear to be the case when searching the listings. Maybe there's a channel I don't get ?
ABCHD is the only HD channel I see when searching for World Cup, and that's just on weekends. Maybe things will change when it gets further into the rounds.
Was your understanding based on something you can reference?

Thanks....
From the link:
"For the first time, all 64 FIFA World Cup matches will be available in high definition on ESPN HD, ABC HD and ESPN2 HD. "
I'm guess that the "and" should really be an "or"
So they must all be on ESPN2 HD.....Comcast in San Jose doesn't offer ESPN2HD. But maybe they'll switch them over to the other ESPN HD channel. I've seen them do switches like that before on major events. Sucks for setting up recordings though.
Anybody actually get ESPN2 HD? Does it show the games in your listing?

I just wanted to chime in here and say that I bought a Tivo on Monday for the express purpose of taping the World Cup. My VCR sucks and I wanted better quality.
Plus, you know, all the other cool Tivo things....
Go USA! (and England....my brother lives there)

I guess that should be record, not tape....gotta get used to this new fangled terminology...

D* has ESPN2 HD. I haven't checked the listings yet. I don't think my receiver has listings past a week, so I don't expect I would see anything until some time tomorrow evening.

Anyone know why the following occurs (and if it is a bug)
- When I create a Keyword wishlist for "World Cup Soccer" then view the upcoming shows, it only lists the ABC occurance of the show (ie England versus Paraguay), and not ABCHD.
- However when I create a category wishlist for Sports\soccer, then view the upcoming shows, it will show both show the one on ABC and the one on ABC HD.
=======
I am scheduling recordings for all the HD occurances of the "World Cup Soccer"...but I can't do that via my "World Cup Soccer" keyword search, since it only lists one Channel, when the game is really showing on two simultaneously (the SD and HD broadcasts)
Hope that made sense.

In Keyword wishlists, "view upcoming programs" will list only the first occurence of a program. If you want to see a complete list, then go into any one of the listings and then go into "view upcoming episodes". You will see all occurences of the keyword program, including simultaneous occurences and repeats.

Interesting, two people on this thread who bought TiVos specifically to watch the World Cup. The guy who writes http://www.pvrblog.com/ also bought his first TiVo to watch the last World Cup....lotsa soccer fans out there with TiVos. Pity TiVo is still largely a USA-only product. The worldwide potential out there for TiVo is huge.

Thanks...that worked.
Also, good news is that ESPNHD will start showing games as well on 6/16 and thereafter (rather than ESPN2HD like now, which comcast doesn't carry).
I think it's just ESPN's way of getting people to complain to their CableCo, that they should carry ESPN2HD.
I think I scheduled them with one click via the Sports Illustrated "Guru Guide" at tivo.com (tivo central online). Seemed to work pretty well, if you're networked, although tivo did suggest I clear up some room if I really wanted to record all those games. ;)

For some reason, the rerun of the USA -Czech Republic game yesterday wasn't shown in the time slot it said it would be (7pm - 9pm), but started half an hour late, so I missed the last half hour. :( Of course, it might have been just as well, based on the result and on the reports of how the US team played. :)

You're lucky I already watched the game! No spoilers ;)
Heh..I was flying back from DC the other day, trying to avoid making eye-contact with any TV screen in the terminal, lest a WorldCup score be shown.
