Please help with the following:

I have been using Tivo for approximately 6 months and have experienced the following problem three times.

For some reason the unit begins playing back programs with intermittant audio output (the audio is synced with the video). Previously existing and new recordings suffer equally. Resetting the unit does not fix the problem. The unit has managed to begin working again by itself. I am finding the problem to be quite a nuisance and I am wondering if I should send it back for servicing.

What do you think?

Thanks,
AIucci

Need more information ....

* Brand/model Tivo?
* How is the Tivo connected to your TV and other equipment?
* What's your video source (cable, cable box, satellite receiver)?
* How is that video source connected to your Tivo?
* When the audio drops, what happens if you rewind sligtly to replay that segment?

If you send it back for servicing they won't service your unit. They'll swap it with a refurbished unit.

I, too, have the same problem with my TiVo player as AIucci. I have had my unit for six months, also, since Christmas 2005.

The intermittant audio "crackles", and is so bad right now as I'm writing this that only about 2% (no exaggeration) of the audio is actually heard, in tiny, less-than-a-second snippets. When replaying an existing recording, it would often start at the same time, but then, upon rewinding, earlier portions that were heard fine the first time are now affected.

In my case, the video is occasionally affected, too, and goes out for brief moments, but the problem is primarily audio.

I've had the problem happen off and on for the past three weeks, and it happens just about everytime I try to watch anything now, after a half-hour to an hour of watching usually, but not necessarily all the time. It starts out being from existing recordings, but occasionally everything (including live TV) is affected, as it is right now.

Today, I've tried everything. Unplugging all the audio/video inputs and outputs, skipping the receiver and going directly from TiVo to another television, plugging the TV into a different power outlet than the TV machine, replacing/switching all audio/video cables, but all to no avail. The problem HAS to be coming from the TiVo unit.

Thanks for your time and help in advance,
Paul

litzdog911,
In my case....
Brand/model Tivo?
TiVo Series 2, purchased in U.S.

What's your video source (cable, cable box, satellite receiver)?
Cable, NO cable box

How is that video source connected to your Tivo?
The video source that goes INTO TiVo? It's an RF Cable from wall. The video coming out of TiVo goes through my receiver and then "Monitor Out" to my television. Tonight, I switched from component video to S-Video cables, but the same problems exist. And, as noted in my previous e-mail, I tried skipping the receiver and going directly to the TV, but the same problem occurs.

When the audio drops, what happens if you rewind slightly to replay that segment?
It varies. A similar pattern of audio loss occurs, or an even worse loss of audio occurs. Sometimes, winding past the moment is started to happen, the previous sections of the recording that played back fine the first time are now affected.

Thanks,
Paul

My tivo has had these same audio problems in the past. I played with lots of things to try to figure it out and eventually I decided that it was temperature related. I found that if I took the cover off of the tivo and let it run that way, that the audio problems went away. I did this about 6 months ago and have not had any audio problems since. Except, about 3 months ago, I decided to try to put the cover back on. When I did this, the audio problems soon returned. I then took the cover off again and it has been working fine since.
