View Full Version : Can I return from a menu to the last playing program w/out returning to Now Playing?

Apologies if this is a repeat, because to be honest this seems like it would be a common question, but I've come up blank searching the forums, the FAQ and the web in general, so . . .

If I'm watching a program from the now playing list (not Live TV) and I want to go take care of something else in a TiVo menu, say modifying a Season Pass or changing a setting, it seems there would be a simple way to return to the program I'm watching without navigating back through the Now Playing list.

I realize that from the TiVo menu I just need to press Select 4 times and it defaults through to the last program I was watching, but it still seems like that would be a very common desire, returning to the program I was watching.

Is there something I'm missing here? Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Pressing TiVo twice takes you to the NPL. Then the last one played will be highlighted. Press Play to resume. That's only three presses.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not at my TiVo now, but I think that because my NPL is organized into folders, the initial view of it is not showing the last playing program. Instead it's on the last folder used, and then when I go in there it's the last one playing which is highlighted.

Again, in the grand scheme of things this is no great tragedy, but as incredibly intuitive as TiVo is, I'm surprised that when you're in the middle of a program and you go do some other setup task on the box, that it does not make it easier to go back to what you were watching. I figured there must be some super easy way to do it that I had just missed . . .

You could have to get off your butt and walk across the room to do anything with your Tivo. I'd say sitting back and pressing a couple of buttons is pretty damn easy.

Well congratulations, Mick, that's the kind of can-do attitude and quest for constant improvement that's going to lead to better products and more intuitive user interfaces. Man, let's all say a prayer of thanks that Mick doesn't lead R&D at any company on earth . . .

Mick's reaction to recent innovations:
"MP3's? What a waste! You could have to carry around a turntable and portable diesel generator everywhere you go. I'd say a battery operated tape player is pretty damn easy."

"Air travel? You might have had to get your lazy butt up and walk from New York to Los Angeles. I'd say being able to take a train in 3 days is pretty damn easy."

If you read my post you'll note that I acknowledge it's "no great tragedy" but that I figured there was probably a simpler solution out there. That's all. Keep in mind, Mick, we're all spending time in a discussion forum about a time-saving and labor saving device that helps us watch television more effectively. Taking a holier-than-thou approach about one bit of laziness over another seems pretty silly . . .

Is there a way to make my TiVo do things by just thinking about it ?

It's such a hassle to pick up the remote and push the buttons.

Wow, this is a wonderfully helpful little community we've got going here, isn't it? Jeez, are you both really so not-self-aware that you consider yourselves industrious because you don't mind pressing 4 buttons to do something. All of a sudden you're hearty pioneer types and I'm a lazy bastard because I'm looking to improve a user interface.

OK, I'm impressed, Stanley and Mick are clearly superior human beings because they never go seeking an easier way to do things. Presumably they both still record to a VCR -- no a Betamax -- because it's good enough. They also no doubt have implemented none of the clever keypress tweaks commonly discussed on the boards because even if they DID lower themselves to using a labor saving device like TiVo the plain vanilla would be good enough. (Anyone out there use the 30-second advance hack?)

The reason I posted the query was to draw on the knowledge of others who like to tweak and improve things. It was not, contrary to Stanley and Mick's blazing intuition, to solicit drivel from people with an inflated sense of their own initiative.

Stanley and Mick, it's called an inner monologue and if you don't mind I'd just as soon have you post your thoughts there rather than in my little old thread here. Thanks for your time.

1st - it's not your thread. If you don't want comments, don't post your whine.
2nd - lighten up
3rd - the 30 second skip is not a hack.
4th - lighten up
5th - I wouldn't consider whining about having to press a single button 4 times to get to where you want to be an attempt to improve something. If you want to make a suggestion regarding how a Tivo functions, go to http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=6
6th - lighten up
7th and most important - My response is accurate. Your responses are filled with information you obviously pulled out of your butt.

I want to apologize. I'd earlier thought mick was disparaging my question specifically. I know better now as I was reading an unrelated thread and saw him posting the same witless drivel there. Now I realize that's just his way of contributing what he can. So, Mick, please continue with your rants.

There's a handy feature to search for a particular users posts, in this case all of Mick's can be seen at:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/search.php?searchid=525156

Including, just among the first 10 listings, such witty banter as:

"Uhm, thanks for the inside scoop."

"You seriously want to watch the Kalamazoo Krackpots? They've got to be the worst team in the league has seen in years!"

"Could you be more ignorant?" (this he felt the need to put in boldface)

and, of course, "You could have to get off your butt and walk across the room . . ."

Then I remembered another very useful feature of these forums, in the User Control Panel you can add people to your "Ignore List". Now when I'm reading a thread that Mick's posted in, I see much more useful information than what's in his posts. I see this:
"This message is hidden because mick66 is on your ignore list."
and can actually go directly to posts from people who are answering and contributing. And if I really want to hear what Mick has to say, I can just ask the junior high school kid next door to share his favorite insult or joke, and it'll be like having Mick's wit right there with me.

Thanks, Mick, for reminding me what the ignore list is for . . .

thanks for the link, but all I get is:

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

And you could have quoted me as saying
"Your responses are filled with information you obviously pulled out of your butt."
I think that's a good one, sad because it's true, but good.
