Can you "train" a series 1 Tivo to call out for its program info over a DSL line instead of using the internal modem? I just got Verizon's Voice Wing package to replace my regular POTS line.

Nope, on a Series 1, you're limited to dialup exclusively. That is, of course, unless you want to perform some upgrades to your box (i.e., opening it up and installing a network card.)
Otherwise, it's just POTS (or VOIP if you can get it to work) for you.

Serial PPP is also an option.

What's the best way?
What's the easiest way?
What's the cheapest way?

I think the best way, if you have an existing home network with a router, is installing a TurboNet card in your Series 1: http://www.9thtee.com/turbonet.htm
You will have to remove the cover of your Tivo and slide the card on the motherboard, but it is relatively easy to do. You also would want to buy the Turbonet Connect Kit which includes a short ethernet cable and CAT5 coupler so you can connect the card to your home network.
All the instructions are included, and there are no drivers to install if you have the latest S1 software (3.0).

I did this On my S1 when I switched to VOIP 18 months ago, it worked like a champ.
Once you get the card installed and cabled to your network you need to change teh dilaing prefix to ",#401" . You should double check that prefix I may be incorrect.
