I saw this posted over at the FatWallet forums and thought I'd post it here...again, this is not MY experience, so I don't have further details...
Just picked up a Humax DTR400 at BestBuy in Vernon Hills, IL. It's open box for $149.99 with additional 30% off certain open box items. Additional $150 Tivo service rebate printed out at the register. According to this, due to an agreement between Tivo & Humax, Humax units are still eligible for lifetime service, but you have to call Tivo to get it (can't sign up online).

I understand this to be the case from earler postings in this forum made by TiVo folks.

It's for the Humax DVD-recorder/TiVo boxes only, not the straight standalone.

Well then, a 40 hour Humax with lifetime for $260 or so sounds like an excellent deal, if you could track one down...

Does anyone know if this is also true for the Pioneer 810H also (this is a model with a DVD recorder and lifetime TiVo basic).? It would seem to me to make sense for TiVo to allow those units with lifetime TiVo basic to upgrade to the full service. Better the lifetime fee to TiVo than potentially nothing and still having to provide monthly service.

as I recall, it pretty much comes down to this:
Lifetime is still available on Humax DVD-RW units, if they have no previous activation history. So, on a brand new never-before-activated unit, you're set
Sounds like you've found a great deal there!

It does NOT apply to Pioneer (nor Toshiba) models. Only Humax DVD recorder models.

See post number 3, that's the one just before yours. It answersed your question before you asked it.

Well, per this thread, I saw at my local Best Buy in Crystal Lake, IL that they had two of these units (both brand new in box) left with a yellow clearance tag. It was $349.99 pre-rebate. I had a 12% BB mailer coupon so it came to $328 after tax. I figure if I can get the rebate on this and add lifetime, $477 isn't that bad.
The only wildcard for me is this. I recently bought two of the new Dual Tuner (DT) units and submitted rebates on them. The rebate says only two per household.
1.) Will I actually have a problem submitting a 3rd rebate?
2.) Can I get the rebate if I want lifetime service (or is it just for monthly service plans)?

You probably will be denied a third rebate, but lifetime service doesn't disqualify you.

I can't promise anything, but if you go to Sams Club Auction (http://auctions.samsclub.com) , they occasionally have a Humax DRT800 for sale.
