Man, I'm starting to wonder whether the Series 3 TiVo boxes will EVER come out, and as far as I know there hasn't been an update on the "mid-to-late 2006" release date since January. Or does somebody here know something I don't....? One of my two TiVo boxes just died, which has put an end to my dream of seamlessly transferring my 300-hour HUMAX box upstairs (with the smaller TV) and buying a Series 3 for our "media room," where we have HDTV (through cable) and could really use the HD TiVo. But I digress. I'm just trolling for any information anyone might have about the Series 3 release date. And perhaps hoping to wait it out without paying $150 for an "exchange" of my dead Series 2 box.

Get a new hard drive for the box that died.

We probably won't be able to buy a series3 till about December. It'll be $800-$1000 I heard. A new hard drive for the dead TiVo is a lot cheaper.

The last update was the second half of 2006 not mid to late 2006. The second half does not start until July and I do not expect to hear anything before then. I am betting they are trying for Sept and giving themselves 3 months just in case they have any problems.

Not to mention that's not the kind of thing the company should really sit on at this point.

What do you mean, "Get a new hard drive for the box that died?" Is there a way to get a new hard drive (and where would I get one) without paying $150 to replace the whole box, which is what TiVo will charge me? How do I go about doing that? Whom do I call?

If you really want to buy one that's way overpriced, go to weaknees.com.

If you are a geek and/or know a geek who can do this for you, read:

Not so fast there. Let me ask a few questions.

How is it dead ?

Does it start up and get to the part where the TV screen displays - JUST A FEW MINUTES MORE or the screen displays - WELCOME STARTING UP(or something similar) and stays on that screen forever ? If yes, it's probably the hard drive that died.

Does it sit there and do nothing when it's plugged in ? Is the AC outlet you are plugging it into good for sure ? Try plugging in a lamp to be sure. If the fan doesn't run and the lights on the front are off when it's plugged in it's probably the power supply. I've even heard if the lights on the front are on but nothing else happens it's probably the power supply. You can buy a replacement power supply without contacting TiVo.

My Mother-in-laws unit just died and it was the powersupply cost $60 time 15 minutes. Maybe post the problems with your tivo in the Help forum and they can usually give you an idea what's wrong. Is it a lifetime unit? If not it may not be worth the hassle.

The unit barely starts up; when it's plugged in, yellow lights flash for about 2 seconds, and I get the "Welcome, Powering Up...." screen, but then nothing. The fan does appear to be running.

Where do people buy a new power supply and who would fix it? It is a lifetime unit, so I'm interested in saving it if possible.

Can you hear the hd making any noises at all? If not, it could be a power supply issue. If you do hear it at least a little bit, then its most likely the hd.

Hope this helps:

While I was on the phone with TiVo yeasterday ordering my new D tuner I was told the expected release was October. The sales rep indicated it was pretty solid information.

I've been told personally by TiVo management that CSRs do NOT get ANY information about release dates of upcomming products. So anything that a CSR tells you is purley speculation and/or hear say.

Just like the recent case where one told a forum member that the Series 3 was going to be released within a week or two. Turned out that it was the Series 2 DT that was about to be released.

If something more definitve than "second half 2006" is revealed, you will see it posted here, there is no need to ask.

It'll be $800-$1000 I heard.

So, how many TiVo Rewards points will that be?
