I got a phone call last night offering me to comeback to Direct TV (I switched to Comcast a couple of months ago because of their superior/cheaper HDTV). Here is the deal that they are offering:
$45/month for two TVs
$15 for DVR/HD
$60 Total
They will give me an HD-DVR for $99, but I can get $100 back if I go with a 2 year commitment. They said that any DVR lease fees are included in the $15 fee…
The deal sounds pretty good, but the person trying to pitch it, was clueless and I am not trusting this information. Is there something obvious that I am missing?
What DVR will I be most likely getting?

the 2 yr commitment is mandatory for all hdtivos whether leased or owned so if you can get one free that's great! I'm also assuming of the 15, 5 is tivo fee and 10 is the HD package so dont know where they are charging you your lease fee. With 2 receivers you at least must have 1 lease fee.
I think new HDtivos bought from directv mandate the HD package for 10 bucks. (i could be wrong) If so, You should take a look what channels you will be getting for that 10 bucks. Some people aren't happy with them (tnt espn etc).
also note, you are geting HD locals thru cable. You'd now need to put up and antenna to get them OTA with the HDtivo. It's a better picture so if you are in a good location, i'd go ahead from that perspective. But if you are happy with your cable pic, and not interested in putting up an antenna, then you better stay where you are.
try to figure out the breakdown of that 15 bucks, i'm really not sure what it is the more i think about it

Does it use TIVO interface or something else?
As for the local channels, based on my ZIP code, they said that I will be receiving locals in HD as well. It could be OTA, but I do get a very good reception at my house.

However, the HR10-250 can not recieve your HD-Locals from the DirecTV feed. The HR10-250 can only get the locals via OTA

Before you jump on board, I would get it in writing that they are giving you an HD DVR for $99, and not just an HD receiver.

In that case, how many co-axial cables would need to be routed to the HR10-250?

I hate that they put it in fine print that you need the 'right' equipment. Poor people probably think they get HD locals with a hdtivo with how they word things on their site. If you get OTA in well...and dont care if in 2 years they switch the HD nationals to mpeg4, then get the HDtivo. It will work for a very long time with DTV SD and your OTA.
Then if you like the new nationals, you can just use their dvr for those and keep the HDtivo for all 'the good stuff' ;)

you need 2 from the satellite and i from OTA of course...or can use a diplexor but it's recommended to run a separate line to minimize problems

Just to make sure that I understand you correctly, are saying that I will be able to use it as a standalone unit and manually record the OTA programs if I eventually drop the D* service or get another DVR?

So that is 3 coaxial wires to replace just one for Comcast :(. I have a brand new room, which I pre-wired with hidden speaker wires, 10 outlets, network/voice wire and just ONE co-axlial wire (yes, I know, stupid me...). :o
