My Directtv HDTivo DVR has started making a steady but annoying noise- a very loud hum. It is intermittant. I recieved it at the end of Feb 2006. Is it about to go dead?
Thanks,
Butch

Could it possible be a loose cover? I had one that had an annoying noise. The unit was on a wooden shelf, and the vibration of the unit would cause the cover to hum slightly. I put a towel underneath it and it absorbed this somewhat. Try pressing on the cover to put pressure on it when it's noisy to see if that's your case.
Otherwise, it could be your HD or fan.

Check the internal temp (via System Information). My T60 was making noise like a jet engine and the internal temp was high. Had to finally replace the fan when the noise stopped. Now it is quiet like a lamb.
Recently installed a HDTiVo. It is also very quiet. It replaced a very noisy (harddrive clicking noise) R15.

One of mine has a loose cover and it sounds similar to what you describe. I have to tap it every so often if it gets loud enough to hear outside my cabinet.

wouldn't it be easier to tighten a few screws? :)

Maybe, but since it only happens about once every 6 months and all my stuff is in a cabinet with limited rear access, I have not bothered.
