View Full Version : Do you keep watching after you know it is canceled?

I am not talking about shows that will have a definite end to the story (ala Alias or the West Wing), I mean a newer show that just gets cut, but you were enjoying.

I read this morning that Conviction was canceled. I was really enjoying this show and haven't watch last week's episode yet (not to mention the last two coming up on Friday). I am torn as to whether I want to watch it or not. This has happened a few times this season and I usually end up deleting what I have left to watch even when I liked the show because it just feels pointless to watch them, you know?

Threshold
Book of Daniel
Heist
Love Monkey
Reunion

All four I just deleted. Why torture myself knowing there is no more after that and no real ending...they will just stop.

Killer Instinct
The Inside

The unaired episodes end up on international channels, which end up on torrents. I cant believe they cancelled Conviction.

Sure. If I really like a show, I will watch every eppy that the networks give me.

But here's an extreme example. The WB had a show a couple of seasons ago called The Mountain. It was 13 and out and I recorded every eppy. I didn't get around to watching them until about 8 months after the last eppy aired.

And what was amusing was that I saw the promos for Jack & Bobby (also canned) during the show.

I deleted 2 unwatched Threshold's, 2 unwatched Heists.

Book of Daniel was good enough I watched them all, same with The Inside, Killer Instinct and Nightstalker.

Can't remember any others that I stuck with knowing there would be no conclusion.

Oh, I did watch all the Surface's, but it was cancelled after I'd watched them all.
I still don't believe Invasion's been cancelled, so I'll watch what is left of it as well.

I will. I still have the last ep of Over There to watch.

I still have two eps of Surface and three of Invasion(not including what has not aired).

If I like the show, I will watch all of them. If it is a show that was on the fence, I might not.

Wonderfalls!

I have a few Commander in Chiefs that I'll probably watch. I also finished Book of Daniel.

But I deleted all my Heists.

If there's torture knowing you'll never find out how things go, then you're already being tortured since you'll never find out how what you've already watched proceeds.

So why not enjoy the remaining episodes and get further along with the storylines and characters and then end up at essentially the same level of disappointment you'd otherwise already experience?

I've watched shows that I liked, I hadn't watched, but were canceled. Examples:
-Surface
-Karen Cisco

I still have all the Heist episodes saved. I'll watch them this Summer after I have watched everything else, and if it doesn't take any room for anything else (I guess I could also burn them to a DVD).

ReUnion.... I had 5 or 6 qued up on TiVo...
Once we found out it was cancelled with thought about deleting them.
But then when they announced they where not going to finish the series..... boom...

Commander and Chief we where going to finish... but we waited too long and TiVo bumped one of the episodes... So we may now wait for DVD

Joey... we had a few qued up... then they announced the "soft" cancel...
We didn't keep up, and then TiVo deleted them for us...

So I guess ultimately... once they announced it is cancelled we lose interest....

I guess this answers it for me for you...

I have a few episodes of Conviction, and was hoping to catch up on some more over the summer, but hearing this now I won't even bother.... Was not into the show enough yet to care that much so it is just easier to forget about it.

I think if a show has had a half season or more of episodes you might see it out depending on how many are left... but when a show is still relatively new, it is pretty easy for me to abandon it when it gets canceled.

It varies. It's probably an indication of how much I really liked the show in the first place. I stopped watching Threshold and Book of Daniel immediately, but I'm catching Love Monkey on VH1 right now. Sometimes a series was designed as a short mini series if it started out with an 8-13 episode commitment, with cancellation/no pick-up in mind, so there's some closure in the final episode.

I watched the 2 Heist episodes that were queued up, in the hopes that they'd show the remaining 2-3 they had left in the can over the summer and at least wrap up this particular heist (a la Thief).

Sometimes I'll like an actor so much (Judy Greer in Love Monkey) that I'll continue to watch just to see them in something new.

I deleted Book of Daniel. I didn't like it that much. I will watch all of Invasion, Conviction and the last Love Monkey. I really like Love Monkey and don't care if it "ends" or not.

Yes, though I usually will read the spoiler summaries for all episodes first. Lessens the blow of being "left hanging." I kind of like having the completeness of having all the episodes.

Besides, it's not like I was watching Karen Sisco or Threshold for the plots...

If the show has a continuing plot line that I know will not be resolved I will stop watching it. If it is just a episodic sitcom I'll keep watching it.

I almost never keep recording after I hear something been canned. In fact I have gone as far as to delete episodes I have not had time to watch yet. Just did so with Commander and Chief

We watched Reunion up through the end, and I'm watching Love Monkey on VH-1 right now. We have the last 2-3 CinC's still on the Tivo, and we'll probably watch them once the summer repeats start.

Speaking of which, CiC is back for the summer with remaining episodes:

I watched the last episodes of Tru Calling, but I waited almost 6 months after they were shown.

I watched Crusade, even though it had been cancelled before it was even shown. Bought the DVD, also.

I wonder what the ratings are on John Doe, now that the SCIFI channel is showing those? I'm not very interested in re-watching them, since the end was unresolved (to put it mildly). Technically, I guess John Doe wasn't cancelled, it just wasn't renewed.

I pretty much do it this way.

1. If i've never watched it, i delete everything in now playing (like Love Monkey)
2. If it's a show that's pretty much standalone, i'll finish them (like In Justice or Conviction)
3. If it's a show that has one big plot that I won't get to see the ending, I'll stop watching (Threshold, Heist)

If something's worth my time to watch it, I will watch it until there is no more to watch. If I don't like something, I would have stopped watching it long before I heard of it's cancellation.

If I am becoming tired of a show when cancellation is announced, I might consider watching it to the end to see how it plays out.

If you like Judy Greer, she's a prominent guest star on Arrested Development (3rd season DVD should be out soon).

I watched all of those too. The only one I deleted was Reunion. I ended up watching CIC and Joey because mostly the weekly story lines were self contained. With Reunion, it would have left me hanging, so I decided to kill it (but I did hold out hope for about 3 months before killing it).

So my rules are...
if it's a serialized series, with no closure (a la Reunion), I delete without watching.

If each episode is generally self contained, even though there might be some storylines that carry over, I'll generally watch (a la CIC)

If the series is cancelled and they will have a definitive ending, I'll watch (a la AD or Alias)

If it's a series that I recorded and NEVER begain watching, but was saving for a rainy day, and it's cancelled, I'll delete, no matter what.

They are both canceled, not just speculation.

here (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/newswire.aspx?id=7156) is the Invasion announcement and Surface is not listed on NBCs Fall Schedule.

For me it depends on at what point the show is cancelled. If something is cancelled abruptly like Love Monkey was, I will usually go ahead and delete the show(s) I still have on tivo.

On the other hand, if a show simply isn't being renewed like Conviction, I will probably go ahead and finish out the season.

Depends on how much I liked the show, and to some degree on what type of show.

If it was something I kind of liked, but was built around a season long (or longer) mystery and they didn't get to film the conclusion I'll probably drop it as soon as I know its canceled.

But if I really like it, and especially if it is more self contained episodes I'll watch all I can get.
For example, I'm watching all of Love Monkey on VH-1. I watched the rest of Keen Eddie a year or two ago when it finished up on Bravo.
I grabbed the unaired episodes of The Inside.
I bought the DVDs for Firefly and Wonderfalls partly to see the unaired episodes.

I'll probably watch the final episode of Invasion even though I know it isn't coming back. I'll probably shield my partner from that knowledge until after it has aired since he likes the show.

Firefly.

I dragged my feet for several months since I knew it was canceled. Finally SciFi ran a marathon and I decided to tag it and watch it. Now I have to borrow a friends copy of Sirenity as I'm hooked.

Same with me, I'll watch and hope the hybrids just take over since it won't be back.
