View Full Version : Using Leapfrog Remote Extender - No love

I have a DirecTiVo R10. I have recently purchased a Leapfrog LF-IRX off of Amazon.com. I read the reviews and many people with tivos reported success. However none specified tivo standalone vs directivo.
I read the manual up and down from my directivo and couldn't accertain whether my remote was infrared or not. but being that it is LOS I only had to assume it was.
Now with this Leapfrog remote extender I am having no luck. the manual is a simple read and I have even moved both the reciever and base unit into the same room and am using the included IR blaster.
The reciever lights up when the remote is used, however there is no reaction on the base unit (which interfaces with the R10 via IR, so IR-RF-IR).
Now has anyone had any luck with this setup and a directivo, the r10, etc? The Leapfrog got good reviews ion the tivo section of this forum.
It is supposed to work with any remote and component. So any advice or experience would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you :-)

Do a search on Google, RemoteCentral and other forums.
I've never had one of these, but I seem to remember reading that people have used masking tape or something to correct problems.
I bought the RF converter that's on the Weaknees site and love it. I use it to control a Dtivo that's in my basement from my 2nd floor bedroom at the other side of the house and it works like a charm.

Trust me, I have been all over google, and nothing wielded any results on RemoteCentral either :-( Anyone else have any ideas or experience with this? I am going in for surgery this week and am going to be laid up in bed for a while and kind of want to be able to knock through my tivo while I heal.
Thanks

I have one also and love it. There should be a cable that plugs into the back of the leapfrog that is on the recieving side close to your TIVO. I have to put that little "eye" in front of my tivo box for it to work. If I go to the side or on top of it, it does not recieve the command.

tmissey, what model directivo do you have?
Yes, I have the ir cable plugged into the back of the base unit. It is right in front of the ir sensor.
The reciever (extension) that goes in my bedroom lights up. The base unit (that goes to the tivo) however does not flash the red light inside. Does your base unit flash when a signal is reciever?
I have a feeling I might have a bum base unit.

Hello,
I have one Leapfrog base unit and two receivers and they work great. Both the base and receive units on mine have four possible frequency positions on them. They must both be tuned to the same number.
I am using them with an R-10.

I have an R10. I will check the model and the lights tonight, and try to reply back to you tonight.

Since you're using it within the same room, this might be an alternative. I was using the Leapfrog for the past 3 years, just so I could point to TV, yet still control the dTiVo & DVD equipment in a cabinet toward the rear of the room. The Leaper was never quite satisfactory ... but I didn't want to duplicate that purchase for something just as flakey. It was especially flakey in late afternoon when a low sun-angle beams thru the windows. It also went completely blind anytime I turned on a flourescent backlight over the window cornice - though it always recovers about 5 minutes later - flourescent still lit - maybe the receiver recognizes that it's background noise.
Then I saw some glowing user reports on the Hot Link Pro, which is a super-sensitive IR receiver. I bought it on-line for $65 - and it's pretty amazing. The receiver's eye is just laying on top of the cabinet, almost opposite the TV, but apparently it gathers the IR signals from the ceiling and walls, and transmits to face-panels thru six little blasters. It has a feedback light that goes nuts when the flourescent lights come on, but it is unphased by the noise. If you hadn't noticed by now .... highly recommended for same-room control.

I do not have a leapfrog brand, but I use the little pyramid IR extenders. I have found it works better with the telescoping antenna (on the reciever pyramid) only half way extended. Otherwise, it picks up stray RF from "other things" and this conflicts with the good RF from the base station. This tip may or may not be applicable to your situation.

I have the model: LF-IRX
I do have a very dim red light flashing on the reciever next to the tivo, but when the remote is used in the other room the light seems to flash brighter.

Well the situation seems to have resolved itself. i put in a call to Amazon and they sent a fresh pair out.
I was correct in assuming that the base unit was defective. It works like a dream and I can now watch my TiVo from the bedroom and have the ability to skip commercials and not have to go to the living room to change channels.
Thanks for all your help.

Hello chamelea :
The eye is so sensitive on the Hot Link Pro that it can be easily "hidden" from the offending flourescent lamps and still see your remote signals.
You may hide it under a toe-kick or behind a speaker grill door slot or even behind the TV. Eve if you leave it in it's present location, just roll the whole eye barrel back away from the lamps until the LED goes completely off.
The performance will increase greatly. Also remeber theses lamps are producing the most IR noise when first turned on. So the best time to mitigate the IR energy is the first few minutes.

Thanks Marcus.
Actually the receiver eye seems unphased by the flouescent noise, works fine anyhow without any mitigation. Based on your hint though, I'll try shrouding it under the cornice, since the flourescents are simply flooding across the ceiling.
Didn't find any need to seek tech support ... kinda funny how it arrived! :D
