View Full Version : Stops recording season passes

I'm having a problem that I'm hoping some TiVo guru can help me with. I have about 24 season passes and for some reason the Tivo stops marking the episodes on all of them for recording. I would notice that there's not much to choose from on the Now Showing list and I check the SP and I View Upcoming Showings and the episodes are there, but they don't have the yellow and white checkmark. The only way to fix it is to choose Recording Options and then Record With These Settings (without changing any settings), then when I View Upcoming Showings for the SP, most or all the episodes are checked. I have to do this with ALL my SP which is a real pain in the ass. Everything seems fine but then it will stop recording episodes again. What is happening is that when I refresh the SP, anything on the View Upcoming Showings is refreshed, but then after a few days, when more episodes are added to the bottom of the list of the Upcoming Showings, they are never marked for recording until I go in and refresh the SP. I thought maybe it was because I had set my SPs for Record 5 or 10 episodes, and when that limit was reached it would stop recording more episodes, so I changed that to Record All Episodes, but that did not change anything. I am wondering if it is because TiVo automatically decides that there is not enough disk space to record all episodes of all 24 of my SPs so it just gives up. But the way I want it to function is that I just want it to record whatever it can, even if it only is able to keep an episode for a day, but keep deleting old recordings. Maybe I'm just not understanding the way TiVo works and how to get it to do what I want. Can someone clue me in please? Thanks!!

The only way to fix it is to choose Recording Options and then Record With These Settings (without changing any settings), then when I View Upcoming Showings for the SP, most or all the episodes are checked.
Are you looking at this screen for the Season Pass, or for a specific episode?
Because, if you do that for a specific episode you are actually telling the TiVo to manually record the episode (shows up as a single check mark in the ToDo List). (Shows scheduled by the season pass will have a double check mark in the ToDo List).

I thought maybe it was because I had set my SPs for Record 5 or 10 episodes, and when that limit was reached it would stop recording more episodes, so I changed that to Record All Episodes, but that did not change anything. I am wondering if it is because TiVo automatically decides that there is not enough disk space to record all episodes of all 24 of my SPs so it just gives up.That isn't the way that the TiVo normally works. Now if you have the season passes set to Keep Until I Delete (KUID), then yes the TiVo will stop recording episodes once you hit the Keep At Most (KAM) limit.
In fact it won't even schedule episodes to be recorded after it knows it will have hit the limit.

But with season passes that are Keep Until Space Needed (KUSN) the TiVo will just delete the oldest episode when it exceeds the KAM limit.

But the way I want it to function is that I just want it to record whatever it can, even if it only is able to keep an episode for a day, but keep deleting old recordings.Right, if the season pass is set to KUSN then this is how the TiVo works.

Is it possible that you have the Season Pass set to First Run Only (FRO)?
I've seen people who misunderstand what that setting means and then don't understand why their TiVo isn't recording things. FRO means that the episode is being shown no more that 28 days after its original airing (based on the guide data). Some people mistakenly think it means the first time their TiVo has recorded that episode.

The reason I ask is that with more and more shows finishing for the summer, FRO season passes are going to stop scheduling new episodes even though there are lots of reruns being shown.

(Oh, Season Passes are channel specific. If you have it set for Law and Order on NBC it won't record the episodes from Bravo or USA).

Finally you might try looking in the recording history at the top of the the ToDo list. Despite its somewhat misleading name you can also use to to look at future items that won't be recorded. That might give you a clue as to why the TiVo isn't scheduling anything for your Season Passes.

Hey thanks for the reply. To answer your questions: I'm looking at the SP, not the individual episodes. So I'm sure that the settings are for the SP and not a specific episode. Also the checkmark I was referring to is actually a double check. I was going off of memory when I posted, but I've since noted that it's actually a double check on the episodes and also on the SP screen itself after I select it.

I only have a couple of SPs that I have set for Keep Until I Delete. The rest are set as Keep Until Space Needed.

I have my SPs set for First Runs & Repeats, which I think means any episode that TiVo hasn't recorded in the last 28 days. (I also have it set to record All episodes). I'm also aware of the channel specific issue, but that doesn't seem to apply here because it's with every SP and are with the episodes on the channel that the SP is set for.

And when I check the Recording History for future dates, the episodes that are not marked for recording in the SP manager are not mentioned at all. It's as if they don't exist at all. This is very puzzling to me.

I had my TiVo replaced a while back because my first one began locking up and rebooting by itself. The old one behaved the same way as this, but somehow I was able to get it to work, but I don't know what I did. Since the same thing is happening on my new one, I can't believe that it was because my previous unit was defective. But I can conclude that there's a problem with the software, or the way I have it set up. I'm just eager to figure out what the heck is going on.

Thanks

When was the last time you re-booted it? If you haven't for a while, then I would pull the plug and wait a few seconds and then plug it back in.

If an episode is not going to be recorded because it doesn't match the settings of your season pass, it won't be listed in Recording History at all. For example, I have a "first run only" season pass for "The Simpsons." The Fox affiliate here in L.A. airs the syndicated reruns on weeknights, but none of those show up in my Recording History; the only Recording History listings I have are for the first-run Fox episodes. (However, shows not recorded because of the "28-day rule" are listed in Recording History. That's not relevant to "The Simpsons," but I do get plenty of "Daily Show," "Colbert Report," and "South Park" listings in my Recording History with my "first run only" season passes for those three shows.)

Thanks for the info, but I've clearly stated that most of my SPs are set as First Runs & Repeats, and it doesn't explain why, when the episodes not marked for recording are then suddenly marked for recording when I go into the SP and select Record with these Options (without changing any option).

Anyway another poster suggested a restart, so I will try that. I appreciate your response.

If the restart doesn't help (and I suspect it won't), your only alternative may be to "Clear program data and ToDo list". It's possible (even likely) that your program data file on the Tivo got corrupted (it happens) and needs to be rebuilt. This happened to me last month. You will lose your season passes and wishlists, and have to re-enter them, but it should take care of the problem. All your recordings will be preserved.
