I have upgraded sveral Tivos using Instancake or just using DD to copy to a new drive, but I decided I would try building a library of the images so if I lose a drive, I can get it back up faster. I'm using the mfstools 2.0 C and when I run the mount command I get this error "mount: you must specify the filesystem type" I have searched verywhere I can find and I see no reference to this error. I read a zillion posts where people are using the Hinsdale guide and are happy campers making backups, but apparently they are smarter than I am.
On another note, can you just 'install' mfstools on a linux box and keep the images there? Just wondering.
Thanks for any help.

From the Hinsdale instructions:
mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

Maybe it's my Neophyteness showing itself but I thought that was if I wanted to put it on the master drive on IDE channel 0. I am trying to put it on the master on IDE channel 1. I've used hdc, hdc1, hda and hda1 just in case, but nothing changes the error.

you CAN run mfstool from another linux, but if you want to do any hacking of the drive (mounting a partition and modifying things there) you'll need a utility like tivopart to allow linux to grok the tivo partitioned drives (using the revalidate option)... there's also the issue of byte-swapping that has to be handled for Series 1 tivo drives

I'm not wanting to do anything to the images except but store them somewhere. I'm up to 4 Tivos now (what are you to do during the NCAA tournament when they have 8 channels going?) and I just know I'm going to inadvertently overwrite one of the hard drives when I'm not paying attention. I was considering seting up one of my spare PCs with Linux and using that. However, it does seem to be quite a leap from Neophyte to competent in the Linux world. Thus I thought I would check to see if anyone else had encountered the issues I'm seeing. I'll finish my Linix book and maybe by then I'll understand enough to do this on my own.
Thanks,

After many hours of head-wall contact, I reformatted the drive and now everything is peachy. Thanks for all of your help.
