I've noticed people express distaste with DirecTV requiring a lease on the HD DirecTIVO's, but we're not able to get cable on our road. Our only choices are DirecTV, Dish Network, OTA or nothing.

Given that, if I were to buy the unit at a retailer like newegg, is there a practical reason to argue with DirecTV that I purchased the unit and it's not a lease? The only reason I can think of is if financial circumstances change and I don't want to be committed for another X months. Other than that, the odds are probably 98% positive that I'll be with DirecTV two years from now.

Am I overlooking something?

Thanks,
Jason

Yep. If you buy it, you can modify it,like adding a second or larger hard drive, and once you eventually leave DirecTV, you can sell the unit.

This whole "Lease" thing is horse hockey. They only call it that so they can keep your equipment.
