I've considered this but the thing is this does me no good at all bec I have a series one with lifetime service which qualifies for a free lifetime transfer to a S2 which is why I'm after a un-subscribed / no strings attached (ie. 1yr contract) TiVo unit... so back to my original question if anyone has a in good / excellent TCD540040 unit they'd like to sell please hit me up , Thx.

You might find a trade for a Lifetimed S2... Heck I'd concider it if there is some way to leverage that LT transfer option to a S3.

TiVo's not allowing the one time transfers to the new DT's so I seriously doubt they'd allow it to an S3 when released... but you never know... but would be nice... but if you do wana trade for a lifetimed S2 TCD540040 then lets talk heh... if notI still wana hopefully find someone who has a "no strings attached" TCD540040 for sale ;-)

They're supposed to allow you to transfer it to any Tivo unit you want. Have you tried? I have a lifetime'd DT, myself...

I've been told several times and even read somewhere lifetimed S1's that qualify for this one time transfer cannot have the service transferred to the DT units... call and pretend you have one and just ask them...
Edit : Better yet someone PM this link to TivoPony and ask him to please reply with his 2 cents on the one time xfers...

Read the first post in the top sticky thread titled "Summary of TiVo's new pricing announcements" by TivoOpsMgr. I'm pretty sure you can do that transfer.

Don't bother them - this question has been answered at least a dozen times.
If you have a grandfathered Series 1 with eligible lifetime and haven't previously transferred lifetime service, you may do a one-time transfer to any new, previously unactivated Tivo box. This would include a Series 2, Series 2 DT, or a Series 3.
You have to call Tivo to do this - if you get a CSR that doesn't know about this, ask to open a case and/or talk to a supervisor.

Well , if thats the case then great... but I still wana try to find a TCD540040 to swap it to myself or find someone whod trade a lifetimed TCD540040 for this S1... either way I'll get what I want hehe...

I'm not sure why you want to get a single tuner TiVo and waste your one time LT transfer. Oh, wait, it's because you have this 400GB drive that has the TCD540040 image loaded on it, isn't it? I would think you could put a new image on it, couldn't you?

Why all of the questions? If the OP wants to buy TCD540040 for whatever purpose, that's the OP's business.
That having been said, I am considering purchasing the DT box very soon. I have a TCD540040 which was put into service on 8/22/04. It is in perfect working order, and has never had any problems. Feel free to e-mail me with some information on what you would be willing to pay for the unit, and shipping costs.

Images aint the reason I'm dong what I'm doing... I'm doing what I'm doing simply because I WANT to... either way fact remains I still need / want a 540040 if anybodys got one , Thx...

Maybe the problem with talking to TiVo folks about getting a unit is that they don't directly sell unsubbed units. Are they denying you even for one purchased retail? Anyway, getting a used 540040 would violate the "previously unactivated" portion of the guarantee.

"Previously unactivated" isn't an issue. TiVo can transfer LT to a box that isn't currently under subscription. So he can do what he's doing.
Sorry, since I am also in a position to transfer my lifetime subscription I can't imagine putting it on a old model TiVo. I know, "to each their own," but I just don't get it.
(Never mind - it IS "currently unsubscribed", not "previously unactivated").

Not sure about that. "Previously unactivated" is different than "not currently under subscription".
I'm pretty sure that the requirement for elibible lifetime transfers is "previously unactivated", e.g. never subscribed before.

The one time transfer is for any unit not currently under contract... doesnt matter if it was previously subscribed or not... and as far as my transfer goin to an old unit sure its dumb in a way but I'm looking at this cost wise and what I wana spend... if I knew I coukd get a DT for $50 - $75 then sure I'd do it and transfer the lifetime to that but even then I dont recall wether or not you can do the one time transfers to these units... that and I remember before there was alot of argument over it because everyone was hearing different stories including me... either way it doesnt matter to much because like you said each to their own but if I can go better then yes I will hehe

In hopes to clear up confusion on service transfer policies....
You can transfer any service agreement to another TiVo DVR of any make or model at any time.
Yes there are limitations to LT transfer,
You can transfer Product Lifetime Service to another DVR only if:
* You activated the DVR less than 30 days ago.
* The DVR was exchanged under warranty, either through the retailer or the manufacturer.
* The DVR was activated under an incorrect service number.
but those limitations do not limit you to what unit you can transfer the service to.
