Well, that didn't take long. The new (refurb) unit I just hooked up Sunday is rebooting every hour or 2, often requiring unplugging because it gets hung. Another one is on the way... This will be the last attempt to get a working model before I go off the reservation.
I did manage to check the temperature between crashes last night, it was 44C. How does that compare to others?
This unit has a much weaker tuner than the last one I had, so there is some fluctuation between models. I got CBS-HD in the low 90's before, now its 85. (sadly 85 is not high enough to avoid accasional drop outs.)

Does anyone make an HD-DVR with HD tuner stand alone unit? Most of my Tivo'd programs are network feeds anyway, and with a better tuner I could get them all OTA.

1) 44c is normal
2) Yes there are a few vendors out there (sony, lg) that make OTA HD Recievers

The TV is the problem? I doubt it.

Have you checked your AC power? Maybe the voltage is too high.

I am on my second one, and I found out why and what is going on.

The TIVO is saying that it is having an heat issue, but it is not, what is going on, at least in my world, is that there is a DROP in power, and the TIVO freaks.

Everytime I would turn on my TV the TIVO would lock up. I have a Sound Sys, A DPL HD TV and the Tivo...

I would come in, turn on the Sound, and the TV, the TV bulb would get going, and BOOM, the TIVO locks up.

So I went and got a cord, and plugged it in to a plug in the other room, and this stopped... It is an issue with power drops as things come on...

So I plugged it back in and I did this... I turned on the TV, waited like 3 mins so the bulb was nice and hot, and then I turned on the Sound and the TIVO does not lock up.

It is not a heat issue, it is a drop in voltage, the heat thing goes off....

Best thing you could do to increase TiVo longevity...buy and hookup a UPS.

I got CBS-HD in the low 90's before, now its 85. (sadly 85 is not high enough to avoid accasional drop outs.)

A lower signal strength of 85 isn't the reason for occasional dropout. It could be at 65 and the PQ should be the same as if the strength was showing 100.

Contingent on what this dropout looks like, 'occasional' is pretty normal...but if it's happening, I dunno...more than a couple times per hour, odds are it's something else signal-related.

if your up to it you can make a hd dvr with a computer. use a add on tuner like the divco fusion usb hdtv tuner with software like beyond tv.

Well, unit #4 is working well so far. /fingers crossed
This time I changed out the power cord (which I haven't before) also, I unplugged it from my surge protector and went straight into the wall. This is a dedicated circuit for just this one outlet, so I doubt it will make a difference but I'll try anything to get one of these things to last more than a few months.
At least this refurb has all the lights working on it. I think I will exchange the hard-drive before I get another refurb if this one dies.

Seriously....you're operating w/o a surge protector now and have gone through 3 units; do yourself a favor and purchase a decent UPS.

Any low end unit will work fine.
