Hello
I've been away from TiVo & Directv for quite some time. Back in the day of the Sony SAT-T60, I had three of them...and loved them!
I'm in the Military so I move around quite a bit. Currently stationed in the "middle of nowhere" at Fort Irwin, CA - which is a couple hours from Los Angeles and a couple hours from Vegas.
The installer is coming tomorrow morning to put up the HD dish and install the HR10-250.
I do not get any OTA locals - and that is fine.
Will I get the LA locals in HD?
Will I be able to record them in HD?
If the answer to those 2 questions is NO, I'll probably cancel the install - I mainly watch/record ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX HD shows (Lost, 24, etc.) and if I can't do that right now there is probably no need to have the HD DVR at this point.
Many thanks!

According to DirecTV's web site, based on Ft. Irwin's 92310 zip code, YES .... you 'll get the LA locals, including the current ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox HDTV channels.

If you can't get them OTA, then they won't be in HD, at least not with the HR10-250. When DirecTV's new MPEG4 HD DVR is released, you'll be able to view local channels in HD off the satellite.
My OTA locals look better than anything in my DirecTV HD package.

Follow the link and you'll see that the LA HD channels are in the eighties and those are recordable by the HR10.

Customers can receive local HD channels by purchasing a new H20 HD receiver and a satellite dish that has the ability to receive programming from five different orbital locations. DIRECTV is offering new and existing non-HD customers who purchase a DIRECTV HD receiver a $200 mail-in rebate. (Limit one rebate per customer.)

Thanks for the replies everyone.
It's good to see that I can record the Locals in HD (LA channels). I tried holding out for the new MPEG4 DVR, but I wanted to have everything in place for football season and I just got tired of waiting I guess.
When checking my order status on web, it shows that I'll be getting the : DIRECTV 18x20 Triple LNB Satellite Dish (not the 5 LNB dish).
I thought all new installs were getting the 5LNB dish? But I guess I was wrong :)
Another Q: Do I go LEASED or OWNED? If I go LEASED, won't I get the DVR replaced for free (or is that just a rumor?) when the new MPEG 4's finally do start rolling out?
many thanks!

If you get your HR10-250 from DirecTV, it will be leased, period. In order for it to show "owned," you would have to get it from a third-party vendor.

oooops, meant to say that it was purchased from Costco, not directly from Directv.

In that case, you *might* be able to convince DirecTV that it is owned.
You're going to like that receiver, and being able to record HD is fantastic. Hope the install goes as planned.

Assuming your Sat-T60 was anything like mine, you won't completely be in love with your HR10-250. It is significantly SLOWER than your older box and the performance degrades significantly with time. Additionally, I have had a recent example of an error message preventing a recording, requiring a restart to start recording again. Never had a single problem w/ the T60. Other than the better HD picture (and that is the whole point), you won't find your HR10 to be even close to an upgrade from your T60. I know I didn't.

if you hate the peanut as much as me, and love your T60 remote...get something like this or other similar sony products
sony vl900 (http://www.remotecentral.com/ureview/4.htm)
I still never can understand how people can get used to the Tivo button up top then reach waaaay down for the 1,2,3,4 or whatever shortcut they are using :) I guess my fingers just aren't that nimble.
I use the vl900 for 2 HDtivos and my tv and receiver. Also controlled my T60 when I had it subbed and 1 HDtivo .
it is heavy so be forewarned.
