Good question. I would have preferred that to TNT-HD.

Because they are more concerned with the bottom line it appears than providing it's customers with quality REAL (non-compressed garbage) HD feeds. There are at least a half dozen quality HD feeds up with some in the clear and DTV fails to deliver any of them.

This kind of reminds me when everyone was screaming for their local networks to be broadcast on Directv. Everyone was fighting and arguing about jumping ship to Cable or Dish to get local networks.
It took Directv almost 3 years to get most of the nation, but in the end most people were happy again.
Now its HD time. Directv is plowing loads of money into more SATS in its bid to be the biggest supplier for HD programming. Giving us locals in HD and other great HD channels. The great thing is we can see things happening. Sats being built and launched. HD locals being turned on around the county. TNT-HD, ESPN-2 HD being turned on since the beginning of the year.
Anyone want to fess up to how many years your local cable company told you they were laying lines for your high speed internet service. Or were planning on upgrading your cable line so you would not see any more lines on all the channels.
I am a Directv fan. They have given me a lot of stuff for a reasonable price. They led the way on a stable-reliable DVR (TIVO), gave me HD before most cable companies even considered it. And gave me a great channel lineup at a reasonable price.
For those who are complaining that HD stuff is going to slow and want to jump ship....go for it. In time Directv will be the leader in HD content and you will be wanting to come back. I know we live in a society that wants everything NOW. I am just enjoying the my Directv and patiently waiting for all the new channels to come. I hoping for a really nice Christmas HD DVR.

Isn't EVERY company concerned about the bottom line?

problem is their prices are not so reasonable as they used to be when you factor in HD. They are ditching the reliable HD DVR and dont even have any DVR option for MPEG4, and they now are way behind cable in many areas, probably for most of the county in terms of viewers. So they had the lead and now they gave it up.
Their MPEG4 rollout is painfully slow. Big deal- they offer the big 4, main HD feed what about PBS, RSN's, or the CW/UPN/WB/independants that are HD in any market. What about sub channels? Each spaceway sat can hold 250 LIL, at the current announced rate it wont b e until year end or 2007 before they even fill ONE of the 2 birds. I understand a phased rollout- makes lots of sense, but why are the skimping by only providing 4 LIL HD cahnnels, when they can get teh PBS for free, already have the rights to the HD RSN's in many markets (as they show them on 95 at times), and probably could get the lessor channels like (CW/UPN/WB) for free? I'm sure no one is holding them back form carrying sub channels either. The only reasoning is they are TOO cheap to pay for a few more encoders for each market- there is no bandwidth reason and no additonal customer premise hardware to offer all the locals and the RSN.
I wish it weren't so, but unless things drastically change, I'm back to the evil cable empire as soon as the Series 3 comes out.
