Is there any way to get a S2DT without committing to a year's subscription? I'm interested but would like to be free to sell it and upgrade to the Series 3 in say 6 months. It sounds like even with the retail units you have to commit in order to get the rebate.

All new activations require a one year commitment, even with used equipment. The issue is seperate from the rebate.

buy a one year gift subscription and use that - then it is prepaid and you can add it to the selling price - if you qualify for MSD then they only draw down the gift sub at 6.95 a month and you have more credit left on the sub to sell when you decide to

If you can't get a commitment-free DVR from the cable company, look at lifetimed TiVos on ebay. Since they removed lifetime from new TiVos, my old TiVo has been going up in value, so you might even make a profit when you sell it.

So after the first year commitment does it just switch to monthly?

yes it does. if you do a bundled deal though you have to call back after the year and commit to another year to lower off the 16.95 or whatever monthly price to the 12.95 or 6.95 price.

if you buy at reatil for 254 and use the 150$ mail in reabte to go to 99$ then you start at whatever monthly rate you are eligible for and the one year starts at that point and you never have to do another one.

the differerence is the mail in rebate and getting the MSD price right away if you qualify for it.

I know this answer is somewhere and I just want to make sure I'm clear. Some of the new plans are somewhat confusing.

I have two LT'ed S2. If I bought a new DT at retail, I have to sign a one year commement. I would be able to start the one year at MSD of 6.95 correct????

Can you move service to another box to finish a commitment?

Yes, correct.

The key for MSD on a new box is buying the box at retail and not directly from Tivo.

It depends on how you get the DT, but in short, you will end up paying 6.95 on one of the DVRs, so it really dosn't matter if you buy it retail or from Tivo. I can't say for an S3, but I'm sure it will be similar.

Now if you get the DT retail, it can also go MSD later this year, if/when you buy an S3, if you buy it from TiVo with a bundle.
