I just hooked my new TiVo and both my wife and I noticed a weird smell coming from the area of our TV/TiVo. Anyone else experience this?

No, I've never experienced any smells coming from my TiVo's.
Did it go away?

This is my fourth TiVo and I have never had any smells.
Well I hooked it up yesterday around 5:00 PM. Didn't notice it until about 8:00 last night, and when I left for work this morning at 4:45 it still smelled.

Do you have any electronic devices stacked on top of the TiVo? Is there anything blocking the rear of the unit where the cooling fan is located?

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I picked up the display unit in CC - it wasn't hooked up - and I checked for the "new electronics smell". Just one of my many quirks ;) Specifically, I checked at the fan outlet. It smelled strangely different from what I was expecting..... I asked one of the CC guys to check it out, and he agreed with me. If I had to guess at what it was, I would some type of lubricant. My first thought would be the fan bearing, but most of them are sealed designs - aren't they?
I wonder if the fan in the DT boxes is different from past designs

No I don't. I just have a corner TV stand for my TiVo, Play Station 2and TV. I even have the back panel removed to cooling purposes.

That exactly what I am talking about. Maybe it just need times to "burn" off.

Additionally, the power supply is right behind the fan, and there is typically non-conductive heat sink compound / sealant on a power supply. This is possibly another source of the DT olfactory experience :)

Yeah I am not too worried about it. I will see if it goes away in a couple of days. I just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing.

I'cw noticed a smell as well. It smells like ozone but there seems to more than just ozone in the small. I can't quite place it. I've had my TiVo runing for 2 days and still smell it.
Enjoy life!

Ugh, my fiance is very sensitive to smells, she has very bad allergies and asthma and this is already a bad time of year for her. I hope this doesn't ruin the fun, we were both really looking forward to the DT. Can you smell it from across the room, or only when you get close to the TiVo?

sounds like a brand new manufacturing line with some very new parts. I imagine whomever TiVo contracted to make the unit is still getting everything in place.
I would think the smell will go away after a week or so.

Myself, I love the smell of new electronics! Like the way an auto enthusiast loves new car smell.

LOL! I scanned this topic and expected this response. I'm glad you didn't disappoint me. But have you read the recent reports about how the new car smell is actually an environmental toxin? (It was in a series of articles about how the air inside your car is worse for you than the outside air in LA during a killer smog. I believe I read the most memorable of the articles in a Los Angeles specific trade magazine.) Not that I'm suggesting that the odor in the S2 is also indicative of an environmental toxin, just that the new car smell isn't necessarily a good thing.

Yeah, my DT also smelled. I opened the box on Wednesday and by Friday (yesterday) I couldn't smell it anymore. Wasn't enough to complain about on my part, but when I saw your post I felt better that others had the same problem with no other issues. Otherwise, even though this unit should have been put on the market years ago, I am happy with the DT.

I ordered a new 80 hour about a month ago, and noticed a bit of a smell for the first week or so. Sort of a new electronics/burningish smell... FWIW, I didn't notice it with the 2 40 hrs I bought about 18 months ago.

I just got my Dual Tuner Tivo last week and noticed the smell most of the week but then on Sunday the smell changed to a burning smell it was a concern since it stunk up the whole room. I had to unplug it for safety concerns. I called Tivo Wednesday and they are sending me a new one and I will be returning the defective unit. They said they had not heard anything like this before so be very cautious especially if it smells like something is burning.

I read somewhere that men are attracted to women that are wearing leather because they smell like the inside of a new car.

Same here. I got two DT's last week as well as setup one for a neighbor. All three had the smell upon opening the carton. Seemed to dissipate after a day or so. It kinda smelled like a hair dryer. Probably the fan motor.

I have a new DT and blame any weird smell on it now. Just another value add from TiVo :D
Don't recall any smell from my DT when I first got it. I have an Optoma projector that fills my living room with an electronic stench every time I run it.

I noticed a little something when I opened the box, but don't notice it at all now (not even a week later) and I usually sit fairly close to the tv (within 6 feet--my apartment isn't that big!)
