Hello --

I bought a TiVo 40 hour Series 2 stand-alone unit on January. I absolutely love it and I'm hooked! However, I keep hearing things about "hacking" your TiVo. What are the advantages to this? I have my TiVo hooked up to my router, so is there any way to store the shows I want to keep on my computer so I can save room for my TiVo? Is this part of "hacking?" I've found alot of resources for the DirectTV-Tivo but not for the stand-alone unit. Sorry if this is a newb question. Thanks for your help.

If you have it networked, as you say, and TiVo Desktop software installed on your PC, your DVR and PC should be able to see one another on the network and this will allow you to transfer shows from your TiVo to your PC, then back again if you wish. The "TiVo Home Media Features & TiVo To Go" forum is the place you can go here to find out more.

Most of the common reasons for hacking is built into SA Tivo's (MRV, TTG, HMO, Tivo Desktop) D*Tivos do not have this functionality. Since I don't have a SA Tivo I really don't what else you would really want. It is my understanding that to MRV, etc with a D*Tivo's in addition to your SA Tivo you will need to hack your SA.

IMO, there is no real major reason to hack S2 Standalones with 7.2 or higher software. I haven't hacked mine since I got 7.x on it.
