My sister called me and asked why the 30 second skip wasn't working... figuring it was another software update just resetting it, I told her to go into a recording, then press the code Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select and listen for the little tones, but she said that nothing comes and the 30 second skip still does the skip-to-end default functionality. Did TiVo remove the 30 second skip? I can't seem to find any info on this forum about it other than one editted post complaining about it :(. Why would they do this? It's one of the selling points of a TiVo to anyone who researches it past asking a salesman. This is on a Series 1 Hughes DirecTiVo unit.
EDIT: Okies, apparrently the recording wasn't playing when she was trying to enter the code. It works again ;).

I came here looking for this subject. I've been using tivo for years and today my 30 second skip was gone too. I put in the code and it was back like normal. I came back from work and it was gone again. Put in the code and it works but it feels like tivo is resetting it or something.
Anyway, i dont know whats going on. Thats why i did a search to see if anyone else experiences this.

It could mean that your TiVo is rebooting spontaneously, which can be a very bad sign. Each time it reboots, it resets the skip (unless you have hacked it to be permanent). You get reboots when there are software updates, but if you are getting them all the time, you are looking at problems, probably a flaky hard drive.

This thread talks about a bug being fixed regarding reboots. It'll probably fix your problem soon.

I had not seen that. Hopefully it will be the cure and not a real problem. :)

They wouldn't.
I doubt they'll never enable it by default, but they won't ever get rid of it either ...

Put the TiVo clock up on the TV and when that goes you will know your TiVo did a re-boot S-P-S-9-S (I think that the code)

Did TiVo remove the 30 second skip?
As this is a backdoor code, there is no reason for TiVo to remove it. Of the number of TiVo owners out there, those that know of the code are a minute fraction and certainly not enough to worry anyone at TiVo, so a removal is so unlikely as to say it'll never happen.
If it's disappearing, it's a sign of a reboot. There's no need to put a clock on the screen to know that. It could be power issues - is the box on a UPS? or it could be the hard drive. Both are fixable with the right guidance - and there's plenty of help available on this forum.
Fist thing I would do is invest in a UPS. Staples has a Cyberpower on sale this week for just $19.98. This is worth it even if it's not the power as it will protect anything else you do. If it's the drive, there are replacements available and you could take the opportunity to upgrade the size at the same time. Details are in the TiVo Upgrade forum.
