Ok so like EVERYBODY else.....I can't wait to get a series 3 & I'm trying to figure out if I really should get a S3 or get a DTS2. Well in doing some digging I came across this. I'm not sure how serious we should take it or not, BUT if it is the truth, 700-800 is a little rich for my blood even though it sounds like an awesome product.
So what is everyone else's thought???
You heard it here first! According to a very reliable contact within Tivo the new Series 3 DVR will be available starting Monday September 25, 2006 for a price between $700-$800 dollars. My contact tells me that Tivo is trying hard to bring the box in below $750. The latest specs on the Series 3 are listed below, based on these specifications $750 may not be so high after all!!
6 tuners 2 cable tuners, 2 ATSC tuners, and 2 NTSC tuners. It will only be able to record 2 programs at a time
Output Options - HDMI, component video, S-Video, and Composite
SATA hard drive support
This was off of sleekgeek (sorry I can't put the whole page down....I haven't posted enough). Im' sure you could do a search on their web page.

The timing is right, the price is right, but who knows if the source is reliable.
I would happily buy one if it were in this price range. I'd put a deposit down now if it would get me one from the first shipment.

This isn't new - that report (with identical wording) was out at least a month ago.

That would be a good price if one had HD. It would be a ridiculous price for it simply to work with digital cable as a dual tuner. Perhaps the initial release price will be high, but come christmas 2007 I doubt it will be over $400.

actually I heard it Jan 3rd or s o direct from the TiVo booth at CES via Megazone and his http://www.tivolovers.com/ forum. He talked with several TiVo employess and the 600 - 800$ range was talked about then. Seems like that range is holding up.
anyhow - I am holding on at extended basic cable for a while as I am willing to wait for HD/digital to become more settled in its delivery and subscription packages before I jump on board that bandwagon. So the Sereis 2 DT will be perfect for me at just 99$ and 6.95 a month. No problem with the year comittment here. You all have fun giving the cable company 30$ a month extra and then dealing with digital and cable cards. I sincerely hope you work out in about an 18 month time frame so I can easily slide into using cable and cable card for every show I watch In HD.
You will all get the reward of watching HD now so it sounds liek a fair trade to me ;)

That web site was a very short experiment in using Digg to build an audience by buying people off. Seems like all the the content was pilfered form other sources. Todd Carter, a writer from PVRWire, had to contact the author about reusing a photograph with zero credit.

Yeah, there are not details in that post that I didn't post in January - except for the almost certainly bogus date. I've come to regret my '6 tuners' phrasing which keeps getting reposted.

N00b question: Will a cable box be able to be attached to the S3 box?

No. The S3 unit will have built in CableCARD support so it can record digital channels directly without the need for an external box.

So I guess that would leave tivo customers with SDV (Switched Digital Video) out in the cold? With no way to use the S3?

You can still use the S3, just not for the SDV channels.

Really?
So I buy an $800 Tivo and when my cable company switches everything to SDV it becomes useless? Seems more likely I'll still be able to hook up an external box and use an IR repeater and all the other crap we have to deal with now... Aside from protecting your investment, it'll allow the box to be used with external satellite tuner boxes, external OTA HD tuners, etc. Of course I'm not sure you'll be able to use both tuners anymore if you do this...

No IR Blasters, sorry!

Nope, it becomes "Exhibit A" in a class-action case against the cable companies for ignoring the cable card mandate ... ;)

The box is designed for cable. It will not work with satellite systems. It will accept no other input than coax. It has an internal ATSC tuner, so you wont need an external one but, aside for digital and analog cable, no other program sources are supported. If you want to record composite or s-video sources, get a Series 2. If you want to record component, HDMI, DVI or the like, good luck to you, that gear is expensive.

This has all been covered, many times.
The S3 has no A/V inputs at all. It has two coax inputs - one for antenna (NTSC/ATSC) and one for cable. No other inputs, no IR or Serial control jacks. It works with cable and antenna *only*, it will not work with satellite at all.

OK, I was aware that there were no AV inputs, but you're saying there's one coax input for cable and one for antenna. Does that mean dual tuners for ATSC OTA is a no go? I know the slots for the CableCard(s) provide dual tuner ability there.

What makes you think that? No reason you shouldn't be able to record multiple feeds ATSC OTA.

I know the slots for the CableCard(s) provide dual tuner ability there. Antenna input can be either NTSC or ATSC OTA. Each input is split internally so that both tuners have access to all of your inputs. The only thing that complicates that scenario is if you only have 1 single stream cablecard then only 1 tuner has access to encrypted cable channels. For the case you want only ATSC OTA then simply hook up your antenna to the ant input and both tuners can record from it.
