While it "may" not be a scam, I think anyone selling "information" on Ebay is pretty shady.

Well, he does claim to offer a refund if it doesn't work. But I wouldn't buy.

Well, he does seem to have a lot of favorable feedback, but one neutral that said "DTV advised me that $200 retention credit is not avail anymore. Didn't work!!!!" gives a good clue as to how to try and get it (i.e. threaten to switch to cable perhaps). In any case, probably nothing you could not do on your own with a little persistence.

These "offers" were floating around last August/September, when we were all getting HR10-250s for $199 after rebates. I strongly suspect that's all this will turn out to be - and, of course, it's not been available for about six months!

While it's not a scam in the strict sense of the word, it is profiting from knowledge undoubtedly gained from TCF and is now inaccurate.

Interestingly, one buyer asked for the wrong item and was told it wouldn't be available until July '06 - HR20 anyone? ;) Of course it's more CSR misinformation, but interesting, nonetheless.

That old axiom 'if something sounds too good to be true....', usually is quite appropriate in these instances.

Simply preying on the weak and ignorant.

He'll say call retention and ask for a $200 rebate/credit. Then buy the unit for $399.
It definitely worked a while back, and his information costs him nothing so he can afford to provide a money back guarantee.

It it works for just 10% of the people who didn't know anything about the retention department, and he promptly gives a full refund to the other 90%, then he's out nothing and doesn't get neg feedbacks. Plus he pockets the money from the 10% it works on.

It's not a scam necessarily, just not information you need to pay for at all.

Keep in mind not everyone visits forums like this. I once paid for an 'information' auction because I did a bunch of Googling and could not find the answer. It cost me $5 and was a really simple thing that I probably could have eventually figured out. But I figured my time was worth more than the $5. So my point is that just because something has no value to you, doesn't mean it doesn't to someone else.
